Full job description

We are a crowdfunded company and have a dedicated and enthusiastic community of backers who are helping us create the “Best Damn Space Sim Ever”. We want to build the best we can deliver and we believe wholeheartedly in the value of exceptional diverse talent.

Founded in 2012 by renowned game developer Chris Roberts, Cloud Imperium Games (CIG) is one of the largest global independent studios, dedicated to delivering next-generation AAA games. CIG prides itself in thinking outside the box, encouraging creativity and developing ground-breaking technology. CIG believes in raising the bar for the gaming industry and the community as a whole.

About the Role:

As a Junior Environment Artist at CIG, you will embark on a journey to help build the most ambitious locations in gaming. From the vastness of deep space to the intricate details of a planetary outpost, you’ll be part of our Star Citizen Environment Art team that creates environments at an unparalleled scale.

This is a growth-focused role. You will be responsible for supporting the creation of high-quality, hard-surface locations – think massive space stations, sprawling cityscapes, and atmospheric underground facilities. Under the guidance of our senior talent, you’ll learn to master “Cinematic Sci-Fi Realism,” creating believable spaces that immerse players in our unique universe.

What does a Junior Environment Artist at CIG do?

  • Learn and apply our mid-poly workflows to create photorealistic sci-fi assets, from architectural kits to smaller prop sets.
  • Assist in dressing and assembling environments within our propriety game engine, learning how to balance visual “wow-factor” with technical constraints.
  • Work directly with Art Leads to receive feedback, refine your eye for detail, and understand the “why” behind our artistic pillars.
  • Partner with Design, Lighting, and VFX teams to understand how art supports gameplay and performance.

What do we expect from our Junior Environment Artists?

  • A stellar portfolio – to showcase your foundational skills in 3D modelling, texturing and composition. We want to see your potential!
  • Basic proficiency in industry-standard tools (like Maya, Max or Blender) and a solid understanding of UV mapping and PBR texturing.
  • A deep interest in world-building and environment storytelling. An interest in Sci-Fi is a plus, but a hunger to learn is a must.
  • A collaborative mindset. You’re comfortable asking questions, taking constructive feedback, and growing with our team.
  • If you’re a budding artist excited by the challenge of creating vast, immersive worlds and you’re looking for a place to sharpen our skills alongside some of the best in the industry – we want to see your work.

Diversity Statement

CIG is a global company, staunchly committed to cultivating a culture and workplace that celebrates all backgrounds, lifestyles, and perspectives. Together, we are creating a space where authentic recognition, appreciation, and understanding of the importance of diversity is fostered by everyone. As an Equal Opportunity Employer, we strive to build a team that represents all walks of life, and we want every employee to bring all the things that make them unique to the work environment. The universe is as vast and varied as the people in it, and it’s our differences that make it special.

Fraud Statement

We are aware of people receiving job offers that fraudulently allege to be from CIG. These types of fraud can be carried out through false websites, fake email addresses claiming to be from our company, or social media. We do not ask for your personal info like bank account numbers, identification numbers, etc through social media or chat-based apps, nor do we request or send money for the purchase of business equipment.

If you suspect fraud, please report it to your local authorities, as well as reaching out to us at info@cloudimperiumgames.com with any information you may have.

If you like wild growth and working with happy, enthusiastic over-achievers, you'll enjoy your career with us!
