Full job description

**PLEASE NOTE - THIS IS A FULL TIME, PERMANENT POSITION. We are unable to accept applications from those still in full time education or seeking seasonal work. Many thanks!**

We have a fantastic opportunity available for a tenacious, personable and experienced bar and restaurant server to join our small and brilliant team at the Barley Mow!

Be aware that this job involves long hours, hard work and interfacing with our (absolutely lovely) customer base. It won't be easy and it's certainy not a 9 to 5, but the rewards are definitely there for the right person!

Since taking over the pub, we're at a pivotal point in bringing the Barley Mow - a beautiful, 16th century thatched pub in an idyllic rural location on the outskirts of Wimborne - back to its former glory following years of mismanagement. We're currently completing a major refurbishment and just need one more experienced front of house staff member who "gets it" to join our team ahead of our grand reopening in a couple of weeks!

Our core business consists of a strong weekday food-led trade with consistent demand for our traditional pub food offering, with a our busiest days being Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We're lucky enough to also have a busy "locals" bar area frequented by walkers, darts players and our wonderful crowd of friendly regulars.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and hard working individual to join our small but busy team, and woud consider candidates from a wide range of backgrounds as long as they possess the correct attitude. Exceptional customer service is at the heart of everything we do, so a smile and "can-do" attitude is crucial above all else!

As a key member of our front of house staff, you will be responsible for providing exceptional service to our guests while ensuring a welcoming atmosphere. Your role will involve preparing and serving drinks, waiting tables in the restaurant, maintaining cleanliness, and generally contributing to a positive guest experience. Key responsibilities include:

  • Preparing and serving a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages to customers in a timely manner.
  • Maintaining a clean and organised bar area, ensuring compliance with food safety standards.
  • Engaging with guests, providing friendly and attentive service while taking orders and offering recommendations.
  • Handling cash transactions accurately and efficiently, using basic maths skills for processing payments.
  • Assisting in inventory management by monitoring stock levels and reporting any shortages or discrepancies.
  • Collaborating with kitchen staff to ensure seamless service during busy periods.
  • Upholding the highest standards of hospitality by responding promptly to guest requests and concerns.
  • Helping us grow our weekday events timetable, including themed nights, pub quiz etc.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience in bartending or a similar role within the hospitality industry is preferred but not essential.
  • Previous pub trade experience advantageous but not essential.
  • Driving license required due to our rural location and lack of public transport links.
  • Basic cleaning skills, as all team members are required to keep the pub clean and tidy at all times.
  • Strong time management skills to handle multiple tasks efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Basic maths skills for handling cash and processing transactions accurately.
  • Knowledge of food safety practices is advantageous to maintain hygiene standards.
  • A passion for customer service and a friendly demeanour that enhances the guest experience.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as required by the business needs.

Please get in touch by email or telephone to apply, and we look forward to hearing from you!

Many thanks,

Tim & Shannon
