About the Service

Our GSA refuge is for women and children who have had to flee their homes because of domestic abuse. We provide support, advice and information for families regarding their housing needs, welfare benefits, mental health and well-being. Staff utilise a Support Plan to prioritise key work tasks and activities on a one-to-one basis and as a group. Staff also empower and equip the women to live independently, within a safe and stable environment free from violence and abuse. Referrals are mainly sourced through the `Routes-to-Support` portal managed by Women`s Aid, but the service also accepts direct referrals in line with its internal criteria. The refuge has 16 self-contained flats with a communal lounge, a communal kitchen, a children`s classroom, as well as a communal garden area. It is funded by Birmingham City Council and the property is owned by Green Square Accord.

To provide support to children and their families whilst they are in our refuge accommodation. To provide a support service to children, specifically those affected by domestic abuse, on an individual basis, using a person centred approach. To empower children and young people to develop a positive attitude to life and self-image, to promote gender equality, to build on their strengths, confidence and self-esteem, to make informed decisions about their lives and build healthy relationships with the non-abusive parent.

You must be able to:

  • Be able to communicate effectively with victims of abuse face to face including supporting their children.
  • To be emphatic, patient and demonstrate listening skills
  • To have knowledge of how trauma affects children and arrange appropriate sessions in a group and 1:1 setting.
  • To work with external agencies, including social care, health visitors, schools and attend core group meetings.
  • Be able to use IT packages and data bases to report and record
  • Able to lead, chair organise meetings and type minutes to meetings
