Job Description: Part‑Time Financial Controller (UK)

Overview

We are looking for an experienced Part‑Time Financial Controller to manage core finance operations in line with UK accounting standards and statutory requirements. This role combines hands‑on bookkeeping with higher‑level financial oversight, including forecasting, credit control for complex vendor agreements, P&L preparation, and bank reconciliation. The position is ideal for a proactive, detail‑driven finance professional with strong UK compliance knowledge.

Ideal candidate would be local to the Sheffield area, willing to make the role their own and embrace the fast paced culture of a small quickly growing business.

Key Responsibilities

1. Bookkeeping & Day‑to‑Day Accounting

  • Maintain accurate financial records in accordance with UK GAAP/IFRS.
  • Manage accounts payable, ensuring timely processing of supplier invoices, matching to POs, and reconciling supplier statements.
  • Manage accounts receivable, including raising invoices, allocating payments, and supporting debt recovery when required.
  • Post journals including payroll entries, accruals, prepayments, depreciation, and other month‑end adjustments.

2. Credit Control & Vendor Payment Agreements

  • Manage credit control, including chasing overdue balances in a professional manner.
  • Oversee and administer complex vendor payment agreements and instalment schedules..
  • Build strong supplier and customer relationships to ensure smooth payment cycles.

3. Financial Reporting & P&L Preparation

  • Prepare monthly and quarterly profit & loss reports, balance sheets, and supporting schedules.
  • Investigate variances between actuals and forecasts, providing commentary and insights for management decision‑making.
  • Ensure reporting accuracy to support annual accounts preparation for Companies House and external accountants.

4. Forecasting & Budgeting Support

  • Produce regular cash flow forecasts tailored to UK banking practices and working capital cycles.
  • Assist with budget preparation, financial modelling, and ad‑hoc scenario analysis.
  • Provide strategic financial guidance to support operational and commercial planning.

5. Bank & Balance Sheet Reconciliation

  • Perform monthly bank reconciliations, ensuring all payments, receipts, standing orders, and direct debits are captured correctly.
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts including VAT control, payroll liabilities, fixed assets, accruals, and prepayments.

6. Compliance, Controls & HMRC Requirements

  • Ensure compliance with HMRC requirements.
  • Maintain robust internal controls and support continuous improvement of financial processes.
  • Prepare documentation for accountants or auditors and act as a point of contact when needed.

Skills & Qualifications

Essential

  • Proven experience in a UK‑based accounting or controller role.
  • Strong understanding of UK accounting standards, HMRC requirements, and statutory financial processes.
  • Strong bookkeeping and reconciliation skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Proficient in UK accounting software (e.g., Xero, QuickBooks, Sage) and Excel.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently.

Preferred

  • AAT Level 4, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent qualification.
  • Experience handling complex payment schedules or multi‑entity bookkeeping.
  • Experience within SMEs or scaling businesses.

Working Arrangement
