Full job description

Location: Guernsey, Channel Islands
Applications are invited from Consultants in Emergency Medicine to join the ED team based at the main Hospital site on the beautiful Island of Guernsey, in the Channel Islands. The ED operates on a 24/7 basis and offers emergency care for the entire population of Guernsey from the island’s main 162 bedded general hospital.
The department receives unrestricted emergency patients at all hours, including children and adults who may be suffering from any conceivable emergency condition. These include medical and surgical patients, trauma of varying severity, children, gynaecological emergencies, mental health problems and minor illness or injury.
The department treats 19,000 patients per annum and acts as the single point of assessment for all acute hospital admissions and referrals from the islands of Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Herm, with demand increasing during the holiday season.
There is a regular need to assess patients referred by GPs to the on call in-patient specialists from the MSG. These patients are sent to the ED for assessment, where the department functions like an MAU/SAU.
The salary for this post is £109,663 to £147,439 dependant on experience in addition to an 8% on-call allowance and a CEA payment of between £8,871 to £17,742 per annum.

This is a Consultant-led department the MDT comprises; Doctors, Nurses, Radiographers. Support Staff include; healthcare assistants, porters and reception staff.
The St John Emergency Ambulance Service charity operates Guernsey’s 24/7 paramedic response and non-emergency patient transport service.
The current Medical Staffing comprises four Consultants (including this post) and nine Associate Specialists who are supported by one fully qualified and three trainee Emergency Medicine Advanced Nurse Practitioners.
The ED, like all other services of the hospital, is provided entirely by consultants and specialists, there are no trainee doctors.

As part of the ED team you will have access to POC Ultrasound, NIV, HFNO, Procedural Sedation & RSI, and unrestricted EM clinical practice, time for comprehensive consultation and time to think on duty.
The budget is supported by an income stream and not compromised by unfair NHS tariffs.
Your 12-session contract will include some on-call requirements, a sustainable frequency of night shifts, senior delivered service (no trainees) and no crowding even in busy times.

The island of Guernsey is in the Channel Islands and has a population of 65,000. It has some of Britain’s finest and best-kept beaches, an especially mild and sunny climate, and an offbeat, historic harbor town in St. Peter’s Port, the island’s capital.

This unique integrated health service delivers a diverse range of services including diagnosing and treating patients in the island’s acute hospital complex, and supporting people within the wider community.
Guernsey provides excellent Emergency care, supported by modern equipment and is reliant on A&E Doctors recruited to a high standard.
