Job summary
Based between UKHSA Porton and Colindale (London) sites, the High Containment Microbiology (HCM) department undertakes work on the highest categorisation of human and animal pathogens, those at ACDP (Advisory Committee on Dangerous Pathogens) and SAPO (Specified Animal Pathogens Order) Hazard Group 4, to support UK and international clinical and research needs. The main roles of the department are to:
- Deliver efficient effective co-ordination of response to disease outbreaks by high consequence pathogens
- To ensure the provision of trained and competent staff to work at high containment for the UK clinical and public health need
- To develop and implement a scientific strategy to keep the area at the cutting edge of scientific and technological advances for working with high consequence pathogens
- To conduct research and development activities for ACDP4 and SAPO4 pathogens
Job description
- To maintain cell cultures, ensuring that they are available for the departments activities as required and that they are prepared to a high standard
- To carry out routine quality control procedures to ensure that cell cultures are being prepared, recorded and archived to a high standard.
- To assist scientific staff in identifying, evaluating and adapting new technologies where appropriate and to ensure that all activities are undertaken to the highest scientific standards
- Assist in creation of new documentation (standard operating procedures, worksheets, inventories etc.) or updating of existing documentation, as required.
- To maintain equipment, including routine monitoring, calibration and safety checks and maintain records of these.
- To facilitate the day to day running of the laboratory by ensuring the availability of stock and reagents.
- To assist in the instruction and training of other staff and visitors, and to ensure compliance with safety and quality systems.
- Maintain records of all activities as appropriate to ensure compliance with all quality or scientific standards and requirements as needed
- Supply data to agreed time-scales to meet requirements of audit, preparation of reports, presentations and publications
- To obtain and maintain security vetting at SC level
- To support the group manager and project team in accordance with UKHSAs Code of Safety Practice and to work within any Quality Systems that are applicable to the site
- To support the maintenance of health and safety competence to the national occupational standard Make sure your actions reduce risks to health and safety (NOS HSS1)
- To fulfil the requirements of UKHSA Values and Behaviours commensurate with grade
- To comply with all UKHSA policies and procedures.

Essential criteria:
- Degree (or equivalent experience) in a relevant subject (e.g. BSc Virology/Microbiology/Immunology/Molecular Biology/Biomedical Science)
- Experience in a diagnostic or research laboratory
- Experience and/or aptitude for working in a microbiological safety cabinet
- Evidence of core microbiology laboratory skills (e.g. liquid handling, aseptic technique, light microscopy)
- Knowledge and understanding of laboratory safety requirements and procedures
- Excellent time management skills with the ability to re-prioritise and ability to respond to sudden unexpected demands
- Ability to work on own initiative and organise own workload with minimal supervision working to tight and often changing timescales
- Able to work effectively both independently and as part of a small team.
- Experience of working to laboratory quality standards

Security Clearance Level Requirement

Salary Information
If you are successful at interview, and are moving from another government department, NHS, or Local Authority, the relevant starting salary principles for level transfers or promotions will apply. Otherwise, roles are offered at the pay scale minimum for the grade, but in exceptional circumstances there may be flexibility if you are able to demonstrate you are already in receipt of an existing, higher salary. Pay increases are through the relevant annual pay award for the role and terms. Please be aware that the salary is based on the office location.

UKHSA is investing in a new state-of-the-art National Biosecurity Centre in Harlow, Essex, which will eventually bring together teams currently based at Canary Wharf, Colindale and Porton Down. For more details, please see: Huge biosecurity centre investment to boost pandemic protection - GOV.UK.
The new facilities will start becoming operational in the mid-2030s, with full completion by 2038. Staff will move in phases as facilities become available.
