Full job description

Due to our motor insurance terms, you will ideally be aged between 25 and 69 , have a maximum of 6 points and have no AC, BA, CD, DD, DR, DG, IN, MS, TT or UT offence codes showing on your license to apply for this role. You must also live within 8 miles of Southmead Hospital to apply for this role and be able to keep a company van at home.

Delivery Direct Logistics (DDL) are a Taunton based family business with contracts and operations around the UK. DDL was established in 1995 by the still current Managing Director, and specialise in temperature-controlled transport solutions.

All jobs are employed/PAYE, with a modern high spec vehicle and associated costs provided by us.

The majority of items DDL collect and transport are either blood or water samples which we deliver direct to laboratories for analysis. All work is carried out driving hi specification vans, and following processes that are quality driven by the exacting requirements demanded by governing bodies such as the Environment Agency and UKAS.

This role is for our direct, long-term contract direct with North Bristol NHS Trust and centres around the pathology laboratory at Southmead Hospital.

We are looking for a reliable and professional Bristol based driver with an attention to detail, and the right appearance and attitude, to join a team of 12 colleagues collecting and delivering temperature-controlled blood samples and associated small items from GP surgeries and other healthcare facilities in the Bristol area on time sensitive repeat routes and timetables.

We have an immediate vacancy for one full time driver to work Monday to Friday and additionally, 5 weekend days in every 10-week period. The weekend shifts are generally done across 3 of the10 weekends in each period, i.e. you work Saturday and Sunday on 2 weekends, and either Saturday or Sunday on 1 weekend.

You will have up to 5 individual routes a day and stop at a collection or delivery point between 20 and 35 times a day. To ensure samples reach the Southmead laboratory promptly after patient bleed, you will return to the lab up to to 5 times during the day to deposit the samples you have collected up to that point. Whilst this role does not necessitate carrying heavy weights, you need to be reasonably nimble and quick in your movements and adept with a smart phone and barcode scanner to record data at each stop in order to keep to the timetable. Breaks are factored into your day at appropriate times - breaks are unpaid though.

You must have the ability to park a van at home (but not on a busy roadside) where the van will be reasonably safe, and not incur any parking charges or fines when not in use. We are currently looking for a Bristol depot within 4 miles of Southmead and when this has been sourced, you may be required to commute to where the vans are based.

IMPORTANT – Before applying, applicants should take into consideration that DDL is contractually obliged to carry out a standard DBS criminal record check on all new recruits and will require the applicant’s permission to disclose any convictions to the trust.

Next Steps/Interviews

If we wish to proceed with your application, you will receive a message asking you to generate an online driving license check code.

Once we have checked your license, you may then receive a message or phone call to progress your application further - this is likely to be in the form of a video call via the indeed platform.

Shift pattern

Full time, 5 shifts per week (Monday to Friday), guaranteed a minimum of 35 hours; plus 5 weekend shifts in every 10 week period or equivalent.

Monday to Friday hours of work range from starting between 09:00 & 12:00 and finishing between 18:00 and 19:30. Shifts are typically 7 to 9 hours but there may be the occasional need to start slightly earlier or finish slightly later. Generally, if you start earlier, you finish earlier and if you start later, you finish later but either way, you will not exceed the maximum legal working hours in a day which is 11 hours excluding breaks.

Saturdays: We have 3 shift patterns as below but whoever does the shift 3, also does shift 2 on Sunday.

Saturday 1. 0700 to approx. 1500. Pays the hours worked at £13.45

Saturday 2. 1000 to approx. 1430. Pays the hours worked at £13.45

Saturday 3. 1530 to approx. 2200 and covering the night as we have to provide a 30 minute mobilisation service for any urgent call outs from Southmead or Weston Hospitals. You are then on call until 7am. For this shift we pay a guaranteed minimum of 8 hours plus a standby allowance of £25. Any work up to 2100 is paid @ £13.45, and work after 2100 is paid @ £15.55. If you don't actually work 8 hours (standby period is not included in this count), then we top up to 8 at the £13.45 basic rate. Any work above 8 hours is paid at the relevant rate for when work was done.

Sundays; We have 2 shift patterns

Sunday 1. 0700 to 1500. Pays the hours worked at £16.14.

Sunday 2. 1600 to 2200 and covering the night. On call until 7am. For this shift we pay a guaranteed minimum of 8 hours plus a standby allowance of £25. Any work up to 2100 is paid @ £16.14, and work after 2100 is paid @ £18.66. If you don't actually work 8 hours (standby period is not included in this count), then we top up to 8 at the £13.45 basic rate. Any work above 8 hours is paid at the relevant rate for when work was done.

Shifts are planned weeks in advance and the weekend rota is on a 10 week repeat. That said, this is a service critical transport role so even with the best planning, changes happen and often they are at late notice. Flexibility is always essential as you may be required to cover other routes and working patterns during holidays/ sickness.

  • Driving standards - We expect our team to lead by example and set the tone on the road. Our vans are new with private 'DDL' plates and have highly visible distinctive signwriting – you are our company ambassadors on the road and must not adversely react to the lesser drivers out there. There is no need to speed on any of our routes and speeding is not tolerated, along with any other poor driving or inappropriate behaviour to other road users and pedestrians.
  • To treat the company vehicles with respect, and keep yours clean at all times.

  • To embrace ours and our client's health and safety culture, particularly when driving by adhering to site instructions, site speed limits, and the highway code in general.
  • Temperature control - We specialise in temperature-controlled work, so previous experience in this field would be an advantage but not essential.
