Location: UK-Wide – Travel to Multiple Sites Required
Position: Full-Time, Permanent
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience

About the Role

Ultramech Ltd is looking to recruit an experienced and motivated Fire Alarm Engineer to support our expanding Facilities Management operations across the UK.

This is a varied, hands-on position combining planned preventative maintenance, fault finding, reactive repairs, system improvements and the independent delivery of smaller fire alarm projects.

The successful candidate will work alongside our established specialist fire alarm subcontractors on larger and more complex projects, whilst taking responsibility for planning, managing and completing smaller installations, modifications and remedial works independently.

We are looking for a practical, technically competent engineer who is confident taking ownership of works from initial assessment through to completion, whilst maintaining the highest standards of fire safety and compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake planned preventative maintenance (PPM), servicing, testing and inspections of fire detection and alarm systems across multiple UK sites.
  • Independently manage and deliver smaller fire alarm projects, including installations, system extensions, modifications and upgrades.
  • Work alongside existing specialist subcontractors on larger installations and more complex fire alarm projects.
  • Diagnose and rectify faults on conventional and addressable fire alarm systems.
  • Install, replace and configure fire alarm devices, including detectors, manual call points, sounders, interfaces and associated equipment.
  • Carry out programming, configuration and commissioning of fire alarm panels and devices within competency and manufacturer authorisation.
  • Investigate recurring faults and recommend practical, cost-effective remedial solutions.
  • Assist with system surveys, technical assessments, specifications and quotations.
  • Liaise with site management and coordinate works to minimise disruption to building occupants.
  • Produce accurate service reports, commissioning records, test certificates and associated documentation.
  • Ensure all works are undertaken in accordance with BS 5839-1, relevant legislation, manufacturer requirements and applicable fire safety standards.

Skills & Experience

Essential:

  • Previous experience as a Fire Alarm Engineer, Fire Detection Engineer or similar.
  • Strong working knowledge of conventional and addressable fire alarm systems.
  • Proven experience in servicing, fault finding, installation and commissioning.
  • Ability to independently undertake smaller fire alarm installations, modifications and remedial projects.
  • Good understanding of BS 5839-1 and relevant fire alarm installation and maintenance requirements.
  • Ability to diagnose system faults and provide effective technical solutions.
  • Confidence in organising and completing works with minimal supervision.
  • Good communication, reporting and customer service skills.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel throughout the UK.

Desirable:

  • Experience with systems such as Advanced, Kentec, C-TEC, Morley, Apollo, Hochiki or similar manufacturers and protocols.
  • Manufacturer-specific training or programming certification.
  • Relevant electrical, fire detection or life safety qualifications.
  • FIA training or equivalent recognised industry qualifications.
  • Experience with cause-and-effect programming, fire alarm interfaces and associated life safety systems.
  • Previous experience working within commercial properties, student accommodation or facilities management environments.

What We Offer

  • A varied role working across an established and expanding UK property portfolio.
  • Opportunities to independently manage and deliver smaller fire alarm projects.
  • The chance to work alongside experienced specialist contractors on larger installations.
  • A supportive engineering and management team.
  • Opportunities for further technical training and manufacturer-specific development.
  • Competitive salary and employment package, dependent on experience.
