Full job description

Trainee Security Systems Engineer – Installation, Service & Maintenance

Kettering, Northamptonshire
Starting salary: £27,476.80 per year
Full-time, permanent
Training provided, with salary progression as your skills develop

Sonic Security Services Ltd is an established NSI Gold-approved security company based in Kettering. We are looking for an enthusiastic, reliable Trainee Security Systems Engineer to join our team and build a career in the electronic security industry.

Previous electronic security experience is not essential. An interest in practical work, technology and learning new skills is more important. Experience using tools, electrical knowledge or IT skills would be beneficial.

The role

You will work alongside experienced engineers, learning how to install, service, maintain and fault-find electronic security systems at customer premises.

Your training will cover:

  • Intruder alarm systems
  • CCTV systems
  • Access control systems
  • Fire alarm systems

As your skills develop, you will learn how to commission systems, diagnose faults, complete technical documentation and demonstrate systems to customers.

You will receive practical training, ongoing support and relevant manufacturer and industry training, with the opportunity to progress towards working independently as a Security Systems Engineer.

The role involves working at height and occasional working away from home, including overnight stays.

What we are looking for

Applicants must have:

  • A genuine interest in developing a career in electronic security
  • A positive attitude and willingness to learn
  • A practical approach to solving problems
  • Good communication and organisational skills
  • Reliability, attention to detail and a responsible approach to work
  • The ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team
  • Willingness to work at height following appropriate training
  • Flexibility to occasionally work away from home, including overnight stays
  • A full UK driving licence
  • The ability to commute reliably to Kettering

You do not need to be able to install or fault-find security systems independently when you join. These are skills you will develop through training and experience.

Responsibilities

Under the guidance of experienced engineers, you will:

  • Assist with installing and commissioning electronic security systems
  • Help service, maintain and fault-find existing systems
  • Learn to work safely and to relevant industry standards
  • Work at height using ladders, steps and powered access equipment, following appropriate training and safe working procedures
  • Complete job sheets and technical documentation accurately
  • Communicate professionally with commercial customers
  • Take care of company equipment, tools and customer premises
  • Attend relevant training courses and put new skills into practice
  • Occasionally work away from home, including overnight stays, with advance notice and an allowance provided

Once appropriately trained and competent, you will be expected to participate in the company call-out rota.

Package

  • Starting salary of £27,476.80 per year
  • Salary reviews and increases linked to your skills, competence and progression
  • Paid overtime and performance bonus opportunities
  • Additional standby allowance and paid call-outs once participating in the rota
  • Company van when appropriate to your role and progression, subject to insurance requirements
  • Company pension
  • 28 days’ holiday, including bank holidays
  • An additional day’s holiday for your birthday
  • Ongoing manufacturer and product training
  • Uniform, specialist tools and relevant equipment provided
  • Allowance for occasional overnight working

The role is field-based and covers Northamptonshire and surrounding areas.

Employment is subject to satisfactory industry screening and vetting. A DBS check will be arranged where required. Relevant training and certification, including IPAF where needed, will be arranged as part of your development.

How to apply

Please apply with your CV and a brief explanation of why you would like to train as a Security Systems Engineer.

Include details of any practical, electrical, IT or customer service experience. This can include college courses, personal projects or previous employment.
