As the Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) Lead, you will be responsible for developing and embedding evidence-based PBS practices across all the services that support people with learning disabilities, autism and mental health needs. You will play a key leadership role in promoting person-centred, trauma-informed, and rights-based approaches that enhance quality of life and reduce behaviours that challenge. Working alongside the allocated service champions, families, and professionals, you will ensure the consistent delivery of safe, ethical, and effective support.
Key Responsibilities:
· Lead the implementation and ongoing development of Positive Behaviour Support strategies across services supporting individuals with learning disabilities, autism, and mental health conditions.
· Undertake functional behavioural assessments and develop individualised PBS plans that are person-centred, proactive, and strength-based.
· Support staff to understand the underlying needs and functions behind behaviours that challenge, with a focus on compassion and dignity.
· Deliver training, mentoring, and reflective practice sessions to build staff confidence and competence in PBS approaches. Working alongside the PBS champions in each service to ensure that PBS plans are reviewed regally and or when there are new behavioral presentations identified.
· Work collaboratively with individuals, families, advocates, and multi-disciplinary professionals (e.g., psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists) to ensure holistic, joined-up support.
· Ensure interventions are evidence-based, ethically delivered, and aligned with best practice frameworks (e.g. NICE guidance, Restraint Reduction - In the context of restraint training, CPI stands for Crisis Prevention Institute).
· Promote the reduction of restrictive practices and support services to implement alternatives rooted in positive, person-led strategies.
· Monitor PBS implementation through data collection, analysis, and quality assurance tools; contribute to service audits and improvement planning.
· Support compliance with regulatory and commissioning requirements, including those set by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
· Contribute to service reviews, incident debriefs, and safeguarding processes where behaviour is a factor.
Essential Criteria:
· A relevant qualification in Psychology, Behavioural Science, Health and Social Care, or a related field.
· Proven experience in applying PBS in social care settings, specifically supporting people with learning disabilities, autism, and/or mental health needs.
· Strong knowledge of functional assessment, behaviour analysis, and person-centred planning.
· Experience developing and implementing PBS plans that have led to measurable improvements in quality of life and behaviour.
· Excellent communication and training skills, with the ability to influence practice at all levels.
· A sound understanding of safeguarding, human rights, the Mental Capacity Act, and current regulatory frameworks in social care.
Familiarity with relevant legislation and good practice guidance, including NICE guidelines and CQC’s regulatory standards.
Desirable Criteria:
· Postgraduate qualification or formal certification in Positive Behaviour Support, Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), or a related discipline.
· Experience working in multi-site or community-based social care services.
· Training in trauma-informed care, restrictive practice reduction, or systems leadership.
· Membership of relevant professional bodies (e.g. UK-SBA, BILD ACT, BPS).
