Full job description

The Star and Garter Pub is looking for an Apprentice Commis Chef to join their small friendly team. Gain hands-on experience and learn your trade in this welcoming country pub renowned for its seasonal menus and locally sourced ingredients where you will prepare and cook a variety of dishes while working towards your Level 2 Commis Chef Apprenticeship.

What you will gain:

  • You’ll learn from experienced chefs, develop essential kitchen skills, and build the foundations for a successful career in hospitality.
  • You will assist the rest of the team with day-to-day tasks, improving their knife skills and food knowledge.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist the kitchen team with the daily preparation of ingredients.
  • Maintain a clean kitchen and comply with all EHO food safety regulations.
  • Prepare all dishes as per the Head Chef's menu guidelines.
  • Collaborate with other chefs to develop all elements of the restaurant’s menus.
  • Store and label all foods in line with regulations.
  • Support all team members in their duties, including hot section, cold section, pass, and dishwashing.
  • Ensure all kitchen admin is always up to date, such as recording fridge temperatures.
  • Control food stock, minimize and record wastage.
  • Support senior chefs in stock control and storage management systems within the kitchen.
  • To understand and adhere to all elements of the restaurant’s health and safety procedures.

Working Week: 30 hours minimum per week on a Rota to be confirmed to include one day study at Chichester College.

Qualifications Required: GCSE Math and English minimum grade 2 will be required to be eligible to apply for this apprenticeship. In the event you do not have your GCSE you may be able to study for these subjects in functional skills alongside the apprenticeship.

Future Prospects: There is a possibility of future progression on successful completion of the apprenticeship.

What you need to know:

  • Attendance at Chichester College will be required so ability to travel will be essential.
  • Own transport would be an advantage.
  • Location is close to Ford Station and situated by the River Arun.
  • Shift work will be on a rota and may involve evening and weekend work.
  • This Level 2 qualification is a 15-month apprenticeship including the 3 months end point assessment.
  • You will need to commit to the learning and stay at the employers until the apprenticeship is successfully completed
  • To apply you must have lived in the UK for a minimum of 3 years before the start date of the apprenticeship learning and have authorisation to work in the UK.
  • You cannot apply if you already have a qualification equal to or higher than the apprenticeship standard being studied.
  • You can apply if you have a higher qualification than the apprenticeship standard in an unrelated subject.
  • You should live in the area local to the employer and the college campus offering the apprenticeship.

Further Information: Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage (ANMW): The National Minimum Wage for Apprentices is £8.00 per hour (As of the 1st April 2025). This is the legal minimum pay per hour applying to 16 to 18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their apprenticeship. For apprentices 19 or over who have completed their first year and are continuing their apprenticeship, the National Minimum Wage appropriate to their ages applies.
