Full job description

About us

MakeMyHouseGreen is a growing UK solar installation company. We quote, design, and install in-house, and we're MCS-registered. Every panel we fit sits on someone's roof — so good roofing is at the heart of what we do.

The role
We're looking for a roofing apprentice to learn the trade with us on domestic jobs across London. You'll earn while you learn, working alongside experienced roofers and our solar install team, with day or block release to college towards your Level 2 Diploma in Roofing Occupations.

Around three domestic installs a week that the team works through together. Steady, predictable work — time to do the job right, and to learn it properly along the way.

Read this part before you apply

We'd rather be straight with you than have you find out in week two.

This is physical, outdoor work, all year. You'll be on a roof in February rain and in August heat. You'll be carrying tiles up a ladder, stripping old roofs, and clearing sites at the end of the day. Starts are early, on site for 8/8.30am and if you're not there, the team is a man down.

It's also a real trade. Two years in, you'll have a recognised qualification, a skill that pays for the rest of your life, and a stake in the company you helped build. People who want that, and are prepared to graft for it, do well here.

If the first paragraph puts you off, this isn't the one. If it doesn't, read on.

What you'll be doing

  • Learning to strip, prepare, lay, and weather roofs — tile and slate — under the guidance of experienced roofers
  • Working safely at height, with full training, supervision, and PPE provided
  • Helping the install team get systems mounted and roofs watertight, first time
  • Learning to "read" a roof and spot what a job needs
  • Attending college and completing your coursework
  • Mucking in, keeping sites tidy and safe, and building real hands-on skill week by week

What you'll need

  • Some hands-on, physical work behind you — construction, labouring, groundworks, scaffolding, warehouse, or a practical trade. It doesn't need to be roofing, and it doesn't need to be long. But we want someone who already knows what a full day of physical work feels like.
  • Right to work in the UK and eligible to start a UK apprenticeship
  • Reliable and punctual — the kind of person a team can count on, on a 7am start, in the rain
  • Comfortable working at height, or genuinely open to learning
  • Physically up for outdoor, hands-on work in all weathers
  • GCSEs in maths and English, or willingness to work towards Functional Skills as part of the apprenticeship
  • Able to drive across London reliably
  • A genuine want to learn this trade — not a stopgap while you look for something else

Nice to have

  • A CSCS card (or we'll help you get the Apprentice card)
  • Some awareness of working safely at height
  • A full UK driving licence
  • An interest in renewables and the clean energy transition

What's in it for you

  • Pay: £23k in year 1, rising to £27k in year 2
  • A fully funded apprenticeship leading to a recognised Level 2 Diploma in Roofing Occupations
  • Paid college time and proper, patient mentoring from people who know the job
  • Employee stock ownership plan — you own a real piece of what you're building. Genuinely rare for an apprentice role.
  • All PPE and tools provided
  • 25 days holiday plus bank holidays
  • Company pension
  • A clear path to qualified roofer — and beyond
  • A direct hand in the UK's clean energy transition

No previous experience needed. We care far more about attitude, reliability, and a genuine willingness to learn than about what's already on your CV. If you're keen, turn up ready to graft, and want to come out the other side with a proper recognised qualification and a trade for life, we want to hear from you.

Steady, predictable work — around three domestic installs a week that the team works through together. Time to do the job right, and to learn it properly along the way.

Apply if you're keen, dependable, and want to learn a proper trade with a team building something good — happy to graft, proud of work that stands up, and ready to grow into it.

Application question(s):

  • Do you have the right to work in the UK and are you eligible to start a UK apprenticeship

  • Do you have GCSE maths and English at grade 4/C or above — or are you willing to work towards Functional Skills alongside the apprenticeship?
  • Are you comfortable working at height, or genuinely willing to learn?
  • Have you done any hands-on physical work before — construction, labouring, groundworks, scaffolding, warehouse, or a practical trade?
  • This role involves outdoor physical work in all weather, year-round. Are you up for that?
  • What hands-on or physical work have you done? Tell us where, when, and what you actually did day to day.
