Discovery Sciences is a large function within AstraZeneca R&D containing a number of state-of-the art scientific capabilities which enable early drug discovery programmes. Working across all therapy areas we drive the discovery process to deliver candidate drugs to patients in the clinic. We have a number of roles available covering a range of activities involved with early stage discovery campaigns. You could be involved with designing and producing our protein reagents, building bespoke biochemical and cellular assays, identifying new chemical starting points for disease targets or aiding development of cell and gene editing medicines.

What you will do:

We are seeking highly motivated, dedicated and scientifically curious apprentices to join the Discovery Sciences team. You will have the opportunity to build your scientific capabilities, supporting drug discovery programs in a highly collaborative environment. If successful, you will develop your science within an impactful team working at the heart of drug discovery projects. You will work within one of the state-of-the-art capabilities within Discovery Sciences, including Protein Science, Biochemical and Cellular Assay Development, Cell Engineering, High-Throughput Screening and Cell therapy. As a lab-based apprentice you have the opportunity to interact across a broad range of projects with the potential to rotate between different capabilities and impact global initiatives within Discovery Sciences.

Training and Development

AstraZeneca will sponsor you through your BSc Degree in Laboratory Science at NCH London.

The apprenticeship combines working, earning a full-time salary, with fully funded part-time university learning (on average 1 day/week). This will give you the opportunity to gain a qualification, just as you would if you went to university full-time, with the advantage of gaining relevant work-life skills and the excitement of helping to develop new medicines whilst taking your first steps towards a rewarding career.

Skills and Capabilities

We would be looking for the following attributes from our successful applicants:

  • Enthusiastic individuals who are keen to learn and with a genuine curiosity Biochemical and Cell sciences

  • Able to act independently but also to work and contribute in a verry supportive team environment

  • Good organisational and record maintenance skills with an excellent attention to detail

  • The ability to work on multiple tasks and understanding how to prioritise

  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills

  • A proactive approach to problem solving

Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs (or equivalent) grades 9 to 4 including English, Maths and Science

To have achieved or predicted to achieve a minimum of 3 A levels (BBB) - 120 UCAS points or equivalent of which one needs to be Biology

Benefits, open and close dates

This is a 39 month fixed term contract opportunity based in Cambridge with a starting base salary of £21,500 + 11% benefits fund + bonus.

At AstraZeneca, we aim to set you up for success and we recognise the challenges that starting a new job can bring. We therefore offer a relocation package to help with the costs and process of moving for candidates who currently live more than 60 minutes from the site location for this Apprenticeship.
