Job Description

User Experience (UX) Designers form a core part of our Digital Experience community. They are passionate advocates for end users, grounded in best practices and user-centred methodologies.

With strong foundations in UX and UI design, research, data, and design thinking, UX Designers craft engaging, accessible, and useful digital products and services across a wide range of audiences and platforms. They share a versatile base role, often working across all key phases of the User Centred Design (UCD) lifecycle — from Discover through to deliver, while specialising in either design or research.

Our UX Designers are confident working collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams and are comfortable engaging with users, stakeholders, and developers.

As part of their role, UX Designers:

  • Implement user research and usability testing, to inform decisions at both strategic and tactical levels.
  • Undertake tasks such as persona development, needs analysis, site mapping, wireframing and prototyping.
  • Plan and execute research to understand user types, behaviours, and needs — ensuring that digital experiences are truly user-led.
  • Translate research and insights into visual and interactive concepts that evoke engagement and response, leveraging the power of imagery, motion, and interaction.
  • Help teams and clients consume and act on research insights to improve policy, service design, and digital product outcomes.

All roles in our Digital Experience community require a passion for creating digital experiences that delight and inspire diverse audiences. Our UX Designers work collaboratively to shape compelling digital services that are empathetic to user needs and deliver measurable business results.

At this level, the designer is expected to carry out the following duties (but not limited to):

  • Communicate research findings, design rationale, and user needs clearly to teams and stakeholders, supporting shared understanding and decision-making.
  • Champion user-centred and agile design practices, contributing to a collaborative environment across delivery teams.
  • Continuously track emerging technologies, industry shifts and behavioural trends, translating relevant developments into opportunities that strengthen product direction and research or design practice.

UX Designer duties

  • Design interface interactions through an iterative, evidence-based approach. Drawing insight from interviews, analytics, usability studies, and user feedback.
  • Translate research and business requirements into user interface and visual design concepts that maintain brand consistency and visual quality.
  • Create design deliverables such as visual direction, GUI mockups, style guides, and conceptual UI work that help bring ideas to life.
  • Create user-centred design artefacts such as wireframes, information architecture (e.g. site maps and navigation models), and interactive prototypes.

Data and Technology Profession Capability Framework alignment

Our UX Designer community are multi-disciplinary and align to roles inside the Government’s Digital, Data and Technology Profession Capability Framework: https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/digital-data-and-technology-profession-capability-framework#user-centred-design-job-family.
