Engagement & Internal Communications Manager

Salary: £48,000 - £53,200 per annum base (depending on experience). Plus company bonus of £1,800 per annum.

Location: Hybrid (Bristol)

Hours: Full Time

About Swoop

We are a global community of over 100 adventure travel enthusiasts - ex-guides, avid travellers, and those with an adventurous spirit - spanning five continents. Since 2010, we’ve helped more than 15,000 people experience the trip of a lifetime in Antarctica, Patagonia and the Arctic. Our success is rooted in our intimate knowledge of these incredible regions, our deep care for their preservation, our commitment, as a B Corp, to doing what’s right for people and the planet and, above all, our connectedness as a global team.

About the role

We’re growing fast and are looking for someone to join our People team to protect and develop our unique culture and lead our Engagement & Internal Communications strategy. This is a new full-time role, which has direct responsibility for leading and designing our approach to engagement of all our ‘Swoopers’ through connectedness and events, as well as owning Internal Communications across our global business. The Engagement & Internal Communications Manager is responsible for shaping and delivering clear, consistent, and engaging internal communications that connect employees to the company’s vision, strategy, and culture. This role plays a critical part in driving employee engagement, fostering transparency, and ensuring that people feel informed, valued, and aligned.

One of Swoop’s six values is Enjoy The Journey Together, an ethos that we live and breathe with every customer interaction and every internal discussion. The successful candidate will bring that same approach to Swoop internally on a daily basis - effortlessly switching from the creativeness of engaging communications to the detailed requirements of event planning and spearheading other engagement initiatives. This includes leading the ‘Togetherness’ Team and managing our annual ‘all of Swoop’ event as well as a number of smaller socials.

Regarding the annual ‘all of Swoop’ event, this will include the ownership of the full event lifecycle: concept, strategy, logistics, delivery including curating the on-site workshops and activities , and evaluation. You won’t just execute a plan; you will define what “great” looks like and ensure the event meets that standard and its strategic purpose including owning the budget. The ideal candidate will be a strong communicator, able to deliver engaging communications before, during and after the event; exciting and preparing Swoopers, capturing feedback and facilitating reflection.

The Engagement & Internal Communications Manager will live by our values, but will not be afraid to challenge the way we work now to improve things going forwards. Swoop’s values are:

  • Do The Right Thing
  • Passion For Our Places
  • Enjoy The Journey Together
  • Really Know Our Stuff
  • Make The Most of Our Time
  • Lead The Way

You will report to, and be supported by, the Head of People & Culture, working within the People & Culture team. However, the role will be yours to manage and deliver day-to-day and you will need to be confident in finding solutions.

For this to work, you’re going to need to be a lover of organisation and something of an ‘all rounder’ who thrives on pressure and loves the feeling of a productive day’s work. Taking pride in making a difference, you’ll be super organised, a great communicator and love working within a fast paced, entrepreneurial environment.

Key Responsibilities

Our Engagement & Internal Communications Manager will be responsible for:

  • Managing Our Events and our Togetherness Programme
  • Owning and managing all aspects of the ‘all of Swoop’ event: concept, strategy, budget, theme, location scouting, accommodation logistics, travel arrangements, all communications, delivery and evaluation. You will select, negotiate, and manage all partners with delegated decision-making authority.
  • You will define what “great” looks like and ensure the event meets that standard and its strategic purpose.
  • Collaborating with managers to enhance the ‘togetherness’ of Swoop globally
  • Ensuring our virtual and in-person events in all locations keep our team connected in Swoopy and authentic ways
  • Ensuring the celebration of all relevant multicultural events in recognition of our diverse workforce
  • Developing and Executing Swoop’s Internal Communications Strategy
  • Aligning to business goals
  • Partnering with the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and the Management Team to translate strategic priorities into clear, compelling messaging
  • Ensuring consistency of tone, voice, and messaging across all internal channels
  • Coach and support leaders in effective communication with their teams
  • Creating & Delivering Quality Content
  • Creating high-quality communications including company updates, leadership messaging, announcements, and storytelling content
  • Managing and optimising internal communication channels (e.g. Slack, email)
  • Managing the planning and delivery of key communication moments (e.g. company meetings, change communications)
  • Maximising the Engagement of all Swoopers
  • Designing and delivering initiatives that enhance employee engagement and connection to company culture
  • Support the development and communication of the Swooper Value Proposition (SVP)
  • Creating and analysing engagement data (e.g. surveys, feedback) and translating insights into actionable improvements
  • Leading Change and Transformation Communications
  • Lead communication plans for organisational change, ensuring clarity, empathy, and transparency
  • Support change initiatives by crafting messaging that drives understanding and adoption
  • Act as a trusted advisor on communication best practices during periods of change

Skills and experience required

Essential

  • Proven experience in internal communications, employee engagement, or corporate communications
  • Proven experience in event planning, organisation and logistics management
  • Exceptional interpersonal, presentation, written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong stakeholder management and influencing abilities
  • Experience working with senior leaders and cross-functional teams
  • Ability to translate complex information into simple, engaging content
  • Data-driven mindset with experience using engagement metrics and insights
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, evolving environment
  • Experience of working with sensitive and confidential information

Desirable

  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field (Communications/PR/Journalism/Marketing)
  • Experience of working in the travel sector
  • Experience of working successfully with remote teams

Key Attributes

  • Empathetic and people-focused
  • Highly organised with strong attention to detail
  • Creative thinker with a passion for storytelling
