Full job description

Lore of the Sky is looking for a hands-on Assistant General Manager to help lead our hospitality team at Compton Abbas Airfield. With views across the Dorset countryside and a setting unlike most venues, we welcome visitors for food, drinks, events and celebrations. We’re looking for someone who can bring confident leadership to every shift, develop the team and make sure our guests receive a warm welcome and attentive service.

The role

Working closely with the General Manager, you’ll take an active role in the daily running of the business. You’ll be visible on the floor, organise the team effectively and set clear expectations for service. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading busy shifts, keeping service organised and ensuring guests are looked after from arrival to departure.
  • Training and coaching the team, building confidence and holding people accountable for their standards.
  • Supporting recruitment, induction and regular performance reviews.
  • Helping manage rotas, staffing levels and labour costs in line with business needs.
  • Maintaining strong food safety, allergen, cleanliness and health and safety standards.
  • Supporting stock control, reducing waste and improving profitability.
  • Working with the kitchen and events teams to deliver smooth service and well-run functions.
  • Taking responsibility for the venue in the General Manager’s absence.

About you

You’ll have experience as an Assistant General Manager or an experienced hospitality manager ready to take the next step, ideally within a quality pub, restaurant or busy food-led venue. You’ll be someone who:

  • Leads by example and enjoys being involved in service.
  • Gives clear direction and constructive feedback.
  • Stays calm under pressure and makes sound decisions.
  • Understands the balance between excellent hospitality and commercial performance.
  • Spots problems early and follows through on solutions.
  • Takes pride in developing people and creating a team that works well together.

The role includes weekend, bank holiday and event working. You’ll need reliable transport to reach our rural location.
