We’re looking for a commercially minded, creative and driven Buying Assistant Manager to lead our Buying Team while remaining hands-on with buying and product development.

You’ll be responsible for spotting exciting new product opportunities, developing products that stand out from the competition and using sales, costs and margins to make strong commercial decisions.

Buying experience would be great, but it isn’t essential. We’re also interested in people from strong product, e-commerce or commercially focused backgrounds who can demonstrate the commercial instinct, creativity and drive we’re looking for.

Depending on experience, we’re open to appointing at either Team Leader or Assistant Manager level. This could be a fantastic first step into management for the right person, or an opportunity for an experienced people manager to take on greater responsibility.

Experience within buying, product development, e-commerce or another commercially focused environment would be beneficial.

People management experience would also be advantageous, but isn’t essential at Team Leader level. We’re open to someone with the right qualities and potential who is ready to take their first step into management.

For appointment at Assistant Manager level, we’d be looking for more established experience of managing, supporting and developing people.

What will you be doing?

You’ll lead the day-to-day running of the Buying Team while still being in the thick of it with the team and managing your own buying and product responsibilities.

You’ll be responsible for:

• Leading, motivating and supporting the Buying Team to achieve individual and team targets.
• Managing 1:1s, development, performance and general day-to-day team queries.
• Identifying new product opportunities with strong sales and margin potential.
• Researching competitors, markets and trends to spot gaps and opportunities.
• Using sales, costs, margins and product performance to make commercially sound decisions.
• Developing new and existing products, bringing creative ideas for new features, USPs and designs.
• Working with suppliers and internal teams to take products from initial idea through to launch.
• Monitoring product and team performance, identifying when something isn’t working and taking action to improve results.
• Remaining hands-on with your own buying responsibilities and supporting the team wherever needed.

Working hours and location:

The role is full time - starting between 8.00am and 9.30am, and finish between 4.00pm and 5.30pm (37.5 hours per week with 30 minutes or 1 hour for lunch), and you will be based at our modern offices near York (YO60 6PG) 5 days a week, so having your own transport is essential.
