Senior Scientific Editor, Cell Genomics (Cell Press)
Do you have a minimum of 5 years editorial experience?
Do you have experience in editing scientific papers in genomics, genetics, or a related discipline, with a strong track record in publishing cutting‑edge genomic research and technologies?
Location: UK, Spain, Netherlands or China
About the Role
We are seeking an outstanding full-time Senior Scientific Editor to join the Cell Genomics team. We welcome applications from candidates with deep expertise in any area covered by the journal. Ideally, candidates will bring substantial editorial experience, a broad enthusiasm for science, and a strong interest in engaging with important advances across genetics and genomics. We are looking for someone who thrives in a fast-moving intellectual environment, can organize and prioritize across multiple responsibilities, and is excited by the opportunity to help shape research at the forefront of the field.
This is a full-time editorial position based in the United Kingdom, Spain, China or the Netherlands. Cell Genomics is a journal from Cell Press dedicated to publishing impactful studies across the breadth of genomics research, including work that advances understanding of genome function, the relationship between genotype and phenotype, computational and experimental methods, and related policy issues. As the journal continues to grow, this is an exceptional opportunity to join a dynamic editorial team and help define the scientific conversations that will shape the future of the field.
As a member of the Cell Genomics editorial team, you would play a central role in identifying and developing exciting science for publication. Responsibilities include recruiting strong submissions, evaluating research manuscripts, selecting expert referees, identifying timely emerging areas for commissioned content, and working closely with authors throughout the review process. The role also includes writing and editing content for the journal’s website and social media channels, contributing to journal strategy, and representing genomics publishing across Cell Press.
This position offers the opportunity to engage closely with the global scientific community through travel and virtual visits to conferences and research institutions. You will meet leading researchers, learn about important new directions in the field, present the journal to diverse audiences, and bring those insights back to help inform editorial and strategic decisions. For a scientist who is energized by rigorous research, broad scientific engagement, and the chance to influence the field beyond a single laboratory, this role offers a uniquely rewarding next step.
Responsibilities
-
Evaluating submissions rigorously against the journals’ requirements.
-
Support a culture of collaboration, creativity, and high standards. Your contribution will help a great team to reach new heights in serving the community.
-
Building global networks and commissioning exciting papers within the scope of the journal (including insightful front matter articles).
-
Working closely with the Cell Press editorial family, the production and operation team, as well as the business development and marketing team to support cross-journal initiatives and share best practices. Together, we serve the community better.
-
Representing Cell Genomics and Cell Press at conferences and public forums, showcasing the journal’s impact and engaging with the broader scientific community. Your passion will inspire researchers and enable us to serve their needs.
-
Traveling to participate in domestic & international conferences and visiting research institutes to engage with researchers.
-
Collaborating with editorial teams of relevant Cell Press journals.
Requirements
-
A Ph.D. in any area related to the topics that Cell Genomics covers
-
At least 5 years of editorial experience
-
Ability to think critically about a wide range of scientific issues
-
Interest in engaging with the scientific community
-
Talent for distilling complex concepts and communicating them
-
Strong teamwork skills and a collaborative problem-solving mindset
-
Strong time management and organizational skills, with the ability to balance a range of priorities to achieve overall team goals
-
The ability to work well in diverse team settings
-
Have an interest in science communication and publishing trends
Your application must include a cover letter describing your interest in the position and how your skills and knowledge would further scientific communication and contribute to building the journal and advancing its mission. We will consider applications on a rolling basis until August 1st.
Work in a way that works for you
We promote a healthy work/life balance across the organisation. We offer an appealing working prospect for our people. With numerous wellbeing initiatives, shared parental leave, study assistance and sabbaticals, we will help you meet your immediate responsibilities and your long-term goals.
