Full job description

All about the Role
Two days are rarely the same working for the council's Communications Team. The breadth of services you will support is unparalleled and our team has a positive and can-do attitude - just two of the reasons why staff turnover in our service is so low.
As Communications Assistant you will be working as part of a team of likeminded individuals, whose role it is to create engaging and creative content which tells the council's stories and provides information to a range of different stakeholders. On a typical day you could be designing graphics for use on social media, filming the Council Leader for our fortnightly Newsflash video for our social media channels, writing a press release or staff message, or planning a campaign to increase recycling rates or to encourage staff to improve their IT skills.
This role is part-time (22.5 hours) to backfill another member of the team and is fixed term until 31 March 2028. Salary is for a full time role.

All about our Team
This role would sit as part of the Respond, Engage and Monitor side of the Communications Team, which leads on proactive and reactive media, staff communications and engagement, newsletters including our resident enewsletter, and reactive social media. However you would be supporting the wider team so would also be involved in campaign creation, proactive social media content, video production and editing and design.
The role is hybrid, allowing working from and the office, however we expect team members to work from the office 2-3 days a week. We come together for team meetings each week on Teams, with a regular in person meeting, as well as lots of opportunities to socialise as a team out of work.
All about You
This position would suit someone with previous communications experience in a smaller organisation who has knowledge and skills in social media, writing for a variety of audiences, and creating engaging content. You will need excellent communication skills including being able to translate information into written, visual and audio presentations and the ability to converse with others with ease. Photography, videography and editing skills using Adobe Creative Suite, Capcut or similar would be advantageous.
We are looking for someone with a positive and can-do attitude who is confident to give advice and challenge others when needed in a professional and respectful way.
Our Benefits
We value our colleagues and have developed a number of benefits in addition to our generous annual leave starting at 25 days + bank holidays, sick pay and local government pension scheme…
Access to a range of benefits via our Employee Benefits Platform, including in-store and online discounts as well as our Cycle to Work and Home & Electronics schemes
Buy up to 10 days additional annual leave (pro-rata)
Access to car lease scheme
Take your bank holidays flexibly to better suit your personal circumstances
Make Additional Voluntary Contributions (Shared Cost AVCs) to your pension with tax and National Insurance savings
Access to development opportunities including apprenticeships to support your personal and professional growth
Paid volunteering hours each year so you can make a positive impact on our community during your normal working day
Access to our equality, diversity and inclusion network
Opportunities to receive Employee Recognition Awards

Our Commitments
We are proud to be an equal opportunities employer, dedicated to fostering diversity, advancing equity, and building an inclusive workplace for everyone. We welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds and particularly encourage those from underrepresented groups, including disabled people, care leavers, and individuals from minority ethnic communities. Your unique perspectives and experiences are encouraged and valued and will play a vital role in our success.

We are committed to making our recruitment process as accessible as possible. If you are a person who has or considers yourself to have a disability and you require reasonable adjustments to the application or interview process, please contact pccrecruitment@peterborough.gov.uk.

Appointment to this post will be subject to the outcome of an Enhanced Disclosure obtained through the Disclosure and Barring Service. The Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
If you've already applied and completed the recruitment process for this position within the last three months, there's no need to reapply. We really appreciate your interest and thank you for considering us.
