Full job description
Job Title: Registered General Nurse
Reports to: Senior Nurse
Department: Ward, Outpatients, Pre & Post Op
Location: Manchester Private Hospital, required to travel to London Private Hospital as and when required
Pay: £32,000.00 - £35,000.00 per year
Role Purpose:
· To take the lead on clinical shifts, in the absence of Senior Nurse and take responsibility for all aspects of ward management without supervision.
· Act as a role model for the ward team to encourage achievement of the highest clinical quality standards;
· To ensure that standards of patient care are consistently maintained at all times in accordance with agreed operational policies and procedures as a skilled member of the nursing team;
· To promote and safeguard the well-being and interests of all patients, employees and visitors;
· To assist the Senior Nurse in delivering the Hospitals strategic objectives for the ward and nursing service generally.
Core Responsibilities:
· Deliver and supervise care that helps improve the health of the individual
· Demonstrate compassion through effective relationships based on empathy, respect and dignity
· Develop own competence to deliver effective care and treatments through improving clinical /technical knowledge / skill, and expertise
· Communicate appropriately with others involved in the care of the patient
· Act as an advocate for safeguarding patients, demonstrate courage to speak up when there are concerns about care
· Demonstrate commitment to improving care and the patient experience
· To identify, plan, implement and evaluate the care and services offered to our customers within the ward seeing through effective systems of documentation, quality standards, and resource management and allocation;
· To take charge of the ward as required and ensure effective operational management of ward areas on a 24 hour basis;
· Always to be looking for ways to improve the value and effectiveness of care and services delivered;
· To maximise revenue capture and help to achieve the hospital business plan
· Encouraging the development of research and audit based clinical practice and contribute to ward audit programme
· Active participation in customer satisfaction surveys and satisfaction action plans;
· To monitor the abilities of the nurses within their teams and to be aware of their individual strengths and weaknesses in relation to their training and experience.
· Operate within the scope of 1st level competencies and within the framework of NMC guidelines
Key Accountabilities:
· To oversee the ward teams to ensure provision of a high quality clinical care environment to agreed standards and objectives;
· Ensure the legibility and accuracy of patient care plans and/or other reports, charts and records.
· Provide support and guidance for members of staff,
· Work actively as part of an effective nursing team
· Be pro-active in ensuring high quality clinical nursing care and audit as appropriate to monitor the effectiveness of any new interventions and propose change as necessary.
· Assist in the setting and maintenance of clinical standards and implementation of clinical audits;
· Act as a resource for all bank and agency staff as necessary and ensure full understanding of Health & Safety requirements.
· Actively participate in clinical teaching in the ward area;
· Keep up to date with clinical and professional developments in nursing and ensure total compliance with all NMC guidelines;
· Act as advocate to patients, ensuring a patient orientated approach to the delivery of care;
· Work with staff to ensure the ward environment is conducive to continuing education and training programmes;
· Participate in the programme of continuing education and training for all ward staff as required;
· Participate in the induction programme for all newly appointed ward staff as required;
· Facilitate the management of change within the ward areas whether clinical or management in nature;
· Play an active part in recording patient and staff accidents, incidents and complaints as required;
· Establish effective working relationships with Consultant users to ensure their needs and expectations are met;
· Ensure that appropriate systems for the recording and distribution of information relating to patient charges are maintained;
· Monitor the stock levels of ward drugs and consumables;
· Member of, or work with and/or through hospital teams such as the Hospital Resuscitation Team and Infection Control Team;
· Identify opportunities for business and service development that will increase the presence of the hospital in the local community;
· Deputise for the Senior Nurse
Key Performance Indicators:
· Conduct yourself professionally within the standard and framework provided by the NMC “Code of Professional Conduct”.
· Satisfactory nursing audit of ward areas
· Satisfactory education audit
· Positive upward trend in patient satisfaction surveys
· High level of morale in department, low sickness absence and low staff turnover
Knowledge/Skills/Qualifications:
· Registered with NMC
· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
· Ability to support and lead a department
· Post registration experience
· Experience of applying clinical reasoning skills across a range and varied patient case mix and competent across a range of skills
· Evidence of success in working in partnership with Consultants balanced with skill to act as patient advocate.
· Previous experience as Staff Nurse.
· Evidence of continued professional development.
· Knowledge of Care Quality Commission standards
· ENB 998 and/or mentorship course
· BLS/ILS
