Full job description
Assistant Manager — Sambrook's Taproom
Location: Ram Quarter, Wandsworth, London Reports to: General Manager Hours: Full-time, includes evenings/weekends
The pitch
We brew beer on the oldest continual brewing site in the UK, out of a genuinely stunning Grade II listed building in the heart of Wandsworth — and we've built a taproom people choose on purpose, not stumble into. No two shifts look the same: one day it's a full with Wandsworth Run Club, or a private hire on the Mezzanine, the next it's a quiet Wednesday cleaning lines. There's always something on.
A few reasons people actually enjoy working here:
- Our own beer, brewed next-door, poured properly, and yes — a pint at the end of a good shift
- A taproom, snug, mezzanine, and Heritage Centre all under one very old roof, so the job never feels one-note
- Team socials and drinks that follow rules sensible enough to actually use
- A fast-moving business that's genuinely building toward more sites — get in now and you're in early
Here's the less-fun-sounding but more important part: this is a genuine second-in-command role, not a shadow position. We need someone who finishes what they start, keeps the numbers honest, and isn't afraid to say "hang on, let's check that" when the pace picks up. If that's your idea of a good day at work, keep reading.
What you'll actually be doing
- Running stock control and margins through our EPOS system — ordering, goods-in, stocktakes — so our GP% numbers mean something
- Owning rota and labour budget admin, keeping us honest against target
- Driving our training and competency sign-off process so new starters are properly set up, not just ticked off
- Deputising for the GM on shift — floor leadership, guest experience, problem-solving in real time
- Keeping us on the right side of licensing, food safety, and compliance basics without turning the place into a form-filling exercise
What we're looking for
- Supervisory or management experience in hospitality (wet-led or high-volume preferred)
- Genuine comfort with detail and admin — not just tolerance of it
- The confidence to push back on a manager, a plan, or a deadline when the evidence says you should
- EPOS/stock system experience is a strong plus; cellar and cask ale knowledge is a plus we'll happily teach you if it's missing
To apply
Send your CV plus short answers to these three questions:
- Tell us about something unglamorous you saw all the way through — a stocktake, a spreadsheet, a compliance file, a training log — when it would have been easier to leave it 80% done. What was it, and why did you finish it?
- Your manager wants to skip a step to move faster, and you think that's a mistake. What do you actually do in that moment?
- How do you keep track of several ongoing things at once without dropping any of them? Give us a real example of a habit or system you use, not a general answer.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview followed by a paid trial shift — we want to see you in the room as much as you want to see us.
Sambrook's Pub Co — Est. 2008.
Pay: £36,000.00-£40,500.00 per year
Benefits:
- Company pension
- Discounted or free food
- Employee discount
