Full job description

We’re looking for a quality-driven, passionate chef to join our kitchen at Artist Residence in Penzance.

This is ideal for someone who genuinely cares about food, takes pride in every plate served, and is confident working independently in a small, hands-on kitchen, working closely with our head chef Gareth & opportunity to develop into being the new head chef after the summer season ends.

The food
Our food is wholesome, rustic and seasonal — hearty, well-cooked plates using fresh, quality produce. We value creativity, but always grounded in simplicity, consistency and care. This is food done properly, not over-complicated.

The role
You’ll be working closely within a small, hands-on kitchen, mainly covering evening service. For the right person, there is also the opportunity to get involved in breakfast shifts, weekend lunches, and event cooking, depending on availability and interest.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Cooking and plating evening service to a consistently high standard
  • Taking pride in every dish that leaves the kitchen
  • Running service confidently in a small kitchen environment
  • Working cleanly, calmly and efficiently under pressure
  • Maintaining excellent kitchen hygiene and organisation
  • Supporting accurate ordering and stock control
  • Communicating clearly and positively with front of house

Events, seasons & creativity
We host a range of events and larger group bookings, including feasting menus, buffets and grazing-style food. Over the summer months, our garden comes into its own, with plans for BBQs, paella nights, music, and relaxed street-food-style bar food.

We’re keen to inject more fun and energy into what we do, and for the right chef there’s real opportunity to have creative input and help shape these events while keeping quality and consistency at the heart of it all.

About you

  • Solid kitchen experience with a strong understanding of quality cooking
  • Genuine pride in your work, from prep to plate
  • Enjoy working with fresh, seasonal ingredients
  • Understand consistency, cleanliness and good kitchen systems
  • Confident, organised and happy working independently
  • A strong communicator and positive team player
  • Warm, professional and calm under pressure

Room to grow
This role would suit someone who wants to be part of something and grow with it. For the right person, there is genuine scope to take on more responsibility over time and help shape the food offering as the business develops.

About Artist Residence
Artist Residence is an independent boutique hotel group known for being relaxed, welcoming and unpretentious, while always caring deeply about quality and guest experience. Our Penzance house is small, friendly and personal, and food plays a big part in how guests experience their stay.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: £14.00-£16.00 per hour

Benefits:

  • Employee discount

Application question(s):

  • Where do you currently live, and how long would it take you to get to Artist Residence Penzance for an evening shift?

(Please include your usual method of travel.)

  • Why does this role appeal to you, and why do you feel it would suit you at this stage of your career?
  • Describe the kind of food you most enjoy cooking.

(What excites you about wholesome, rustic, seasonal food?)

  • This is a small, hands-on kitchen where chefs often work independently. Can you tell us about your experience running service solo or in very small teams?
  • Tell us about your experience with ordering, stock control, or keeping waste to a minimum.
  • Are you interested in getting involved in events, garden service, or creative pop-ups such as BBQs, paella nights or feasting menus?
