Full job description
We are seeking a passionate, patient, and dedicated In-Person GCSE Tutor to support a Year 11 student with their academic studies across English, Maths, Biology, Geography, and Religious Studies.
The student is looking to re-engage with education after being out of school for almost two years and would like to begin Year 11 in September 2026, with the aim of completing their GCSEs during the academic year.
The successful tutor will provide personalised, one-to-one tuition in the student’s home and help them develop their confidence, motivation, organisation, and academic skills.
Experience working with students with autism, PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance), EHCPs, or students who have been out of education for extended periods is highly desirable.
The student enjoys English and subjects involving writing but finds Maths particularly challenging and will require additional support in this area. They respond best to tutors who are respectful, encouraging, and who do not treat them in a patronising manner.
Location: ST19
Format: In-person, at the student's home
Availability: Monday–Friday, 9:00am–3:30pm
Frequency: To be confirmed
Duties
- Deliver engaging, personalised one-to-one GCSE tuition in English, Maths, Biology, Geography, and Religious Studies.
- Assess the student’s current level and identify areas requiring additional support.
- Create tailored lesson plans based on the student’s individual needs and learning goals.
- Support the student in rebuilding confidence and re-engaging with education.
- Provide additional encouragement and structure around motivation, organisation, and completing work.
- Use flexible and engaging teaching methods to accommodate the student’s individual learning style.
- Provide additional support with Maths, where the student currently finds the subject most challenging.
- Support GCSE exam preparation, revision, and study skills.
- Monitor and record the student’s progress and provide constructive feedback.
- Build a positive, respectful, and supportive learning relationship with the student.
Skills & Experience
- Experience teaching or tutoring GCSE-level English, Maths, Biology, Geography and/or Religious Studies.
- Experience working with children or young people.
- Experience supporting students with autism and/or PDA is highly desirable.
- Experience working with students with an EHCP or additional learning needs.
- Experience supporting students who have been out of education for an extended period.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- A patient, encouraging, and non-judgemental approach.
- Ability to adapt teaching methods to meet individual learning needs.
- Strong organisational and planning skills.
- Ability to motivate and encourage students while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
- A genuine commitment to helping students build confidence and achieve their academic potential.
About the Role
This is a rewarding opportunity for a tutor who is passionate about helping a young person successfully return to education and work towards their GCSEs.
The ideal candidate will be patient, adaptable, motivating, and experienced in supporting students with additional learning needs. They should be able to create a learning environment where the student feels respected, understood, and encouraged to succeed.
All tutoring positions are paid, ensuring your time, experience, and expertise are recognised and valued.
Pay: From £35.00 per hour
