Full job description
Whitcher Wildlife Ltd is looking for a motivated Junior Ecologist to join our growing team on a full-time basis. We're looking for someone with energy, enthusiasm and confidence, who is genuinely passionate about ecology and keen to develop their skills and progress their career within a thriving fast-paced consultancy.
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking to build a career in ecological consultancy. You'll gain experience across a wide range of projects while working alongside and learning from experienced ecologists who will support your development.
The role will primarily involve supporting our busy rail division, assisting with ecological surveys, report writing, project delivery and providing day-to-day support to senior members of the team.
Whitcher Wildlife is a leading consultancy within the rail sector, holding framework agreements and preferred supplier status with many of Network Rail's principal contractors. As our workload continues to grow, we're looking for someone who is enthusiastic, keen to learn and ready to get stuck in.
Whilst rail projects make up a significant proportion of our workload, we also undertake a wide variety of planning and development projects, working with clients ranging from major quarrying companies to small-scale residential developers and everything in between.
What you can expect from us
- Salary of £26,000 – £29,000 depending on experience
- Company vehicle
- Christmas bonus (plus some seriously big prizes at our Christmas parties)
- Regular staff days out
- A genuinely unlimited CPD budget
- Payment of professional memberships and licences
- Flexible working arrangements
- Ongoing support and mentoring from experienced ecologists
- Genuine opportunities for career progression
- A friendly, supportive team
- A varied and interesting client base
- Plus all the usual benefits you'd expect!
What we're looking for
- A strong educational background in Ecology, Environmental Science or a related subject
- Some ecological consultancy experience, either through employment, placements or relevant voluntary work, including protected species surveys and reporting
- An understanding of key wildlife legislation, ecological survey methods and best practice
- Experience using GIS (desirable)
- CIEEM membership (or working towards membership)
- A basic to intermediate level of botanical knowledge
- Confidence communicating with colleagues, clients and contractors
- A full UK driving licence (essential)
- Ability to commute to our Barnsley office
- Ability to work flexible and sometimes unsociable hours to meet project requirements
- Above all, a positive attitude, a strong work ethic, and a genuine desire to develop a successful career within ecological consultancy
Why join Whitcher Wildlife?
We're proud of the team we've built and believe in creating an environment where people are supported, trusted and given opportunities to develop. As a Junior Ecologist, you'll gain hands-on experience across a wide range of projects, particularly within the rail sector, while working alongside experienced colleagues who are invested in helping you progress.
If you're looking for the next step in your ecological career and want to join a growing consultancy with plenty of exciting projects ahead, we'd love to hear from you.
