Technical Applications Engineer – Ultrasound Measurement Systems
Location: Dorchester, Dorset
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
Reporting To: Software & Systems Manager
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
About Precision Acoustics
Precision Acoustics designs and manufactures specialist ultrasound measurement and characterisation systems used by research, medical, and industrial customers worldwide.
Our systems combine precision mechanics, ultrasound measurement hardware, signal processing, and bespoke software. We are a technically driven business working in a specialist field where clear communication, sound engineering judgement, and attention to detail are essential.
About the Role
We are looking for a Technical Applications Engineer to work at the interface between customers, engineering, sales, documentation, and delivery.
This is a varied role combining technical communication, customer support, proposal preparation, documentation, and project coordination. It would suit someone who enjoys understanding customer requirements, translating technical information clearly, producing high-quality written material, and helping a small engineering team stay organised and responsive.
You will support enquiries for our ultrasound measurement systems, help prepare proposals and technical responses, maintain communication with customers, contribute to manuals and technical documentation, and assist with technical coordination across the Software & Systems team.
You do not need prior ultrasound experience. We are looking for someone who can learn technical concepts quickly, communicate clearly and professionally, stay organised across multiple tasks, and work constructively with both customers and engineering colleagues.
Key Responsibilities
- Respond to customer enquiries and help understand application requirements
- Support the sales pipeline by maintaining accurate records of enquiries, quotations, opportunities, and customer communications
- Prepare technical proposals, quotation content, application notes, and customer-facing documentation
- Gather technical input from software, mechanical, electronics, production, and calibration teams
- Act as a link between customers and internal engineering teams before and after order placement
- Produce and maintain user manuals, specifications, system descriptions, test documentation, and compliance-related documents
- Support system testing, validation, setup, troubleshooting, demonstrations, and project handovers where required
- Help improve internal processes, templates, documentation quality, and project visibility
- Assist with technical coordination activities that improve communication, delivery, and team effectiveness
About You
We do not expect candidates to meet every desirable requirement. We are more interested in aptitude, communication skills, judgement, and willingness to learn than in finding someone with an exact background.
Essential
- Degree or equivalent experience in Engineering, Physics, or a related technical discipline
- Strong written communication skills
- Ability to understand technical concepts and explain them clearly
- Ability to communicate professionally with customers and colleagues
- Good organisational skills and attention to detail
- Pragmatic, collaborative, and adaptable approach to work
- Interest in scientific instrumentation, measurement systems, engineering, or applied technology
- Right to work in the UK

Experience in one or more of the following areas would be beneficial but is not essential:
- Applications engineering
- Technical support

Benefits
- Company pension scheme
- Health insurance cash plan
- 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays
- Patent reward scheme recognising technical innovation
- Opportunity to work on specialist technology used by customers worldwide
- Varied role within a small, supportive technical team
- Opportunity to develop the role around your strengths and interests
How to Apply
Please submit your CV along with a short covering note explaining why this combination of technical, customer-facing, and documentation-focused work appeals to you.
We welcome applications from candidates with a range of backgrounds and encourage you to apply even if you do not meet every listed requirement.
