About Oxford Medical Products
Oxford Medical Products is a UK-based medical device company dedicated to developing innovative solutions that address significant unmet clinical needs. Our flagship programme, Sirona, is a breakthrough medical device targeting obesity, a condition affecting hundreds of millions of people worldwide. We combine rigorous science with a patient-centred approach to bring safe, effective therapies to market across global healthcare systems.
Joining Oxford Medical Products means contributing directly to a mission that matters. We are a collaborative, ambitious team that values curiosity, precision, and a shared commitment to improving patient outcomes.
The Role
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Laboratory Assistant to join our growing team. This is an important hands-on role supporting the day-to-day operation of our research and development laboratories. You will work closely with scientists and engineers to ensure the lab is running smoothly, safely, and to the highest quality standards, helping to accelerate the development of our medical device pipeline.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to build a career in a regulated medical device environment, with real exposure to cutting-edge R&D and a supportive team committed to your development.
Key Responsibilities
Laboratory Operations & Housekeeping
- Maintain cleanliness and organisation of laboratory areas, workbenches, storage zones, and shared equipment spaces to the required schedule. Conduct routine lab environment checks and inspections (air pressure, humidity, cleanliness) according to the company work instruction. Document the activities conducted.
- Perform cleaning duties for labware and ensure clean, contamination-free labware is available and correctly stocked across all laboratory areas.
- Manage and replenish consumable stocks including pipette tips, laboratory gloves, vials, wipes, and reagents - reporting low-stock issues with the line manager promptly and raising purchase orders; receiving goods and logging the goods in the internal system.
- Manage stores, ovens, humidity chambers, water bath, fridges, freezers and freeze-dryers — maintaining correct ordering, cleanliness, and routine defrost cycles.
- Manage general waste disposal in the lab and manufacturing area; manage disposal processes for samples, reagents, media, and solvents in line with COSHH, safety regulations, and company SOPs
Equipment & Calibration
- Perform routine calibration of basic laboratory equipment (balances & timers) in line with regulatory and quality requirements.
- Assist with the set-up, maintenance, and basic troubleshooting of laboratory instruments as directed.
- Ensure all equipment logs and calibration records are accurate and up to date.
Sample & Data Administration
- Support sample receipt, labelling, sub-sampling, and storage processes
- Assist with archiving, data filing, and record management in line with company procedures.
- Input data and results accurately into laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and quality management systems as required.
Regulatory Compliance
- Complete assigned quality and training actions in a timely manner and maintain accurate training records.
- Ensure all activities comply with standards and regulatory requirements as required by the company (e.g., ISO 9001, ISO 13485, GxP, and other applicable regulatory requirements).
Team & Communication
- Work collaboratively as part of a cross-functional team, supporting scientists and contributing to a productive, positive lab environment.
- Communicate clearly and promptly with colleagues and line management, reporting discrepancies, safety observations, or issues without delay.
- Contribute ideas for process improvement and operational efficiency within the laboratory.
Person Specification
Essential
- Educated to A-level, HNC, or equivalent; a degree in a life sciences or related field is advantageous but not required.
- Experience working in a laboratory or regulated environment (industry, academic, or clinical).
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to follow written procedures accurately and consistently.
- Good written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Organised, reliable, and capable of managing multiple tasks concurrently.
- Computer literate, including standard MS Office applications.
- Proactive, self-motivated, and eager to learn.
Desirable
- Familiarity with GxP or ISO 13485 regulated environments.
- Experience with LIMS or electronic quality management systems.
- Understanding of COSHH regulations and laboratory safety best practices.
- Interest in medical devices, life sciences, or healthcare innovation.
