Biomedical Scientist – Histopathology
Location: Pathology Department
Hours: 37.5 hours per week, including 1 in 4 Saturdays on a rota
Reporting to: Laboratory Manager / Senior Biomedical Scientists
Accountable to: Head of Pathology

About the Role
We are looking for a Biomedical Scientist – Histopathology to join our pathology team and play an important role in delivering an efficient, effective and high-quality laboratory service.

Working alongside the Laboratory Manager and Senior Biomedical Scientists, you will undertake a broad range of routine and specialised histopathology and cytology activities. You will contribute to maintaining high scientific and quality standards, ensuring that departmental policies, procedures and governance requirements are consistently followed.
This is an excellent opportunity for a Biomedical Scientist looking to develop their technical skills within a supportive laboratory environment while contributing directly to high-quality patient and client care.

Key Responsibilities
You will be involved in a variety of laboratory activities, including:

• Embedding and microtomy.
• Special staining and immunohistochemistry.
• Specimen handling and biopsy/small tissue transfers.
• Frozen sectioning.
• Internal quality control and checking of stained slides.
• Cytology processes, including Gynae and Non-Gynae.
• Rotational working across routine and specialised laboratory bench areas.
• Mohs technique, where fully trained and competent.
• Operating and maintaining laboratory analytical equipment following documented training and competency assessment.
• Participating in internal and external quality assurance activities.
• Supporting the evaluation of new equipment and method verification.
• Assisting with stock control and maintaining appropriate laboratory supplies.
• Undertaking in-house audits and supporting the preparation of relevant documentation.
• Maintaining accurate data entry and complying with governance requirements.
• Supporting the smooth and efficient running of the department.

You will be expected to:

• Work in accordance with departmental policies, procedures and the quality management system.
• Maintain high standards of scientific practice and quality.
• Comply with health and safety requirements and departmental codes of practice.
• Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of developments relevant to histopathology and laboratory practice.
• Work economically and be mindful of the financial and revenue implications of departmental processes.
• Promote a culture of continuous improvement and high professional standards.

Training & Development

• Participate in in-service training and mandatory training programmes.
• Maintain and develop the technical skills required for the role.
• Regularly review and report on your training progress and development needs.
• Participate in competency assessments and training relevant to laboratory procedures.
