Modality's Probe Repair Lab is the first and largest of its kind in the UK and serves a growing global client base. We provide specialist ultrasound probe repair services in accordance with approved Repair Schemes and associated processes developed by Modality's clinical scientists and clinical physicists.

Our work is built on service, innovation and quality. Repairs are carried out with precision and care, and repair effectiveness is confirmed through a strict testing regime based on acceptance standards developed by our clinical scientific and clinical physics teams.

The lab is now entering an important new phase of growth and development. We are expanding to meet increased customer demand, broaden the scope of our authorised repair schemes and modernise the way we approach repair development, testing, production methods and continuous improvement.

To support this, we are looking for a practical, inquisitive and improvement-focused engineer to join the team and help bring fresh energy, curiosity and technical development capability into the lab.

About the role

The Probe Lab Engineer - Probe Repair, Testing and Innovation will be a hands-on member of the Modality Probe Repair Lab in Loughborough.

This role is suited to someone with an HNC, HND or BSc-level qualification in a relevant engineering or applied science discipline, particularly where there is a strong practical engineering component. A higher qualification is not required.

What matters most is practical engineering ability, curiosity, integrity, attention to detail and the desire to help improve how things are done.

The successful candidate will be trained in Modality's probe repair methods and will initially contribute directly to repair activity, testing, documentation and controlled lab processes. However, this is not intended to remain a narrow repair-only role. After appropriate training and authorisation, the post holder will be expected to become fully involved in developing, trialling, evaluating and documenting new repair techniques and process improvements.

We are looking for someone who will ask good questions, investigate methodically, challenge assumptions constructively and help create momentum for innovation within the lab. The role is part of a wider effort to move the lab into its next phase: building on the strong practical experience already present in the team while creating a more curious, evidence-led and development-focused culture.

This is a practical, hands-on role, but it also offers genuine scope to grow with the company as the lab expands its capability, repair schemes and technical ambition.

Key responsibilities

a. Carry out ultrasound probe repair activities after appropriate training and authorisation.

b. Work in accordance with approved Repair Schemes, standard operating procedures and quality-controlled processes.

c. Perform repair-related testing and checks using defined acceptance criteria.

d. Maintain accurate repair records, test records and supporting documentation.

e. Support the development of new repair techniques, methods and production processes.

f. Participate in practical trials, method development, evaluation work and controlled experimentation.

g. Help convert ideas and technical observations into properly documented, testable repair processes.

h. Contribute to the evaluation and documentation of new or amended Repair Schemes.

i. Investigate repair failures, material behaviour, process variation and opportunities for improvement.

j. Assist with validation and verification activity required to support new or improved repair methods.

k. Help modernise production approaches within the lab, including the appropriate use of advanced 3D printing, CAD, prototyping and related manufacturing methods where relevant.

l. Work collaboratively with experienced probe repair technicians, clinical scientists, clinical physicists and quality colleagues.

m. Bring constructive curiosity and practical problem-solving into day-to-day lab activity.

n. Support a culture of quality, traceability, learning, innovation and continuous improvement.

Essential qualifications

a. HNC or HND in an engineering, manufacturing, materials, electronics, mechanical, biomedical, medical technology or applied science discipline.

b. BSc in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical/electronic engineering, materials science, medical technology, physics, chemistry, product design engineering or a related subject, provided the course included a substantial practical engineering component.

c. A recognised technical or engineering qualification supported by strong practical experience in repair, testing, manufacturing, maintenance, prototyping, technical development or process improvement.

d. A higher degree is not required for this role.

c. Experience working from procedures, drawings, work instructions, test methods or controlled documentation.

f. The ability to investigate problems carefully and draw sensible, evidence-based conclusions.

g. The confidence to suggest improvements and the discipline to test them properly.

h. The ability to maintain accurate written and electronic records.

i. Confidence using tools, test equipment or production equipment relevant to technical repair or engineering work.

j. The ability to understand technical instructions and apply them consistently.

k. A willingness to work in a quality-managed environment where process control, traceability and documentation are essential.

l. The ability to take responsibility for their own work and ask for guidance when needed.

Desirable experience

a. Medical device repair, testing, servicing or manufacturing.

b. Ultrasound equipment, probes, transducers or diagnostic imaging technology.

c. Small-component repair, fine assembly, bonding, sealing, encapsulation, soldering or microscope-assisted work.

d. Materials, plastics, polymers, adhesives, coatings, chemical compatibility or surface preparation.

e. 3D printing, CAD, rapid prototyping or additive manufacturing.

f. Practical method development, test jig development or process improvement.

g. Working within ISO 13485 or another regulated quality management system.

h. Failure investigation, root cause analysis or practical process improvement.

i. Technical documentation, work instructions, SOPs or controlled process records.

j. Experience in a laboratory, production, service engineering or precision repair environment.

Working environment

This role is based full time in the Modality Probe Repair Lab in Loughborough. Because the role involves practical repair work, hands-on testing, use of lab equipment and close collaboration with the repair team, it is a site-based position.

The successful candidate will work alongside experienced probe repair technicians who have developed considerable practical expertise within their area. They will also work with clinical scientists, clinical physicists and quality colleagues who support repair scheme development, testing standards and governance.

The role requires someone who can work respectfully across different levels of experience and qualification. The post holder must be willing to learn from established practical knowledge, but also able to bring new thinking, technical curiosity and structured development methods into the lab.

Quality and standards

Modality works to ISO 13485:2016. The quality standards used across the Group have been recommended by IPEM, SCoR, BMUS and AXREM as best practice.

The successful candidate will be expected to understand the importance of quality systems, traceability, documentation and controlled processes in relation to medical devices. Previous experience in a regulated medical device environment would be helpful, but training will be provided.
