Job Overview
Our cutting-edge, next-generation weather and climate simulation systems need to be seamlessly integrated into the downstream forecasting ecosystem to drive performance improvements and retire legacy models. As a Data Interface and Workflow Software Engineer, you will join a team of data and workflow specialists to build robust, scalable connections between critical forecasting components. You will play a pivotal role in maintaining world-leading operational forecasts while laying the technical groundwork for future scientific advancements.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop, maintain, and support specialised scientific software applications to underpin ongoing science programmes.
• Liaise directly with scientific colleagues to understand their requirements and translate them into effective software solutions.
• Build translation tools to convert output from new weather models and formats for compatibility with legacy downstream systems.
• Maintain, document, and support software applications to ensure maximum utility and long-term reliability.
• Adhere to and improve software engineering procedures, best practices, and quality assurance standards.
• Collaborate with team members, share technical expertise, and contribute to continuous group development.
• Participate in developer meetings, write clean production-level code, and contribute to workflow plans.

Ideal Candidate:

• Strong, proven proficiency in Python for building data workflows, scripts, and software applications.
• Solid experience working with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial data formats.
• Comfortable working within Linux environments for development, testing, and deployment.
• Familiarity with Fortran or a strong ability to work with numerical/scientific codebases.
• Demonstrated ability to deliver significant advances in software capability by applying sound technical knowledge and skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to tailor complex technical concepts for diverse scientific and technical audiences.
• Strong commitment to quality assurance, testing, and standard engineering procedures.
• Proactive about expanding personal skill sets while mentoring and supporting colleagues.
