About the role

InvenireX is looking for a practical, hands-on Assembly Technician to join our growing team in Newcastle upon Tyne.

We develop advanced scientific instrumentation for nucleic-acid detection and quantification, and we’re looking for someone to help us build, assemble and test our instruments as we move from prototype development towards repeatable, low-volume manufacturing.

This isn’t a traditional production-line role. You’ll be working alongside our engineering and R&D teams, building real scientific hardware that is constantly being developed and improved.

It’s a great opportunity for someone who enjoys working with their hands, has a good eye for detail and takes pride in building things properly.

What you’ll be doing

Your day-to-day work will include:

• Building and assembling scientific instruments and electromechanical subassemblies
• Installing PCBs, power supplies, sensors, motors, fans, lighting, wiring and other electronic components
• Assembling enclosures, brackets, panels, fixtures and mechanical components
• Routing, securing and labelling cables and connectors
• Using hand tools and workshop equipment for accurate mechanical assembly
• Reading and following build manuals, diagrams, wiring instructions and technical drawings
• Carrying out basic electrical checks using equipment such as multimeters and bench power supplies
• Soldering, connector work and PCB/SMD assembly or rework where appropriate
• Recording build progress, test results and any issues found
• Spotting problems with parts, instructions or designs and feeding these back to our engineers
• Helping us improve our build processes as the product develops
• Keeping your workspace clean, organised and safe

What we’re looking for

We’re more interested in practical ability and attitude than academic qualifications.

You should be comfortable working with your hands and ideally have some experience with electronics, mechanical assembly, engineering, manufacturing, repair work or similar practical technical work.

We’re particularly interested in people who have:

• Experience using hand tools and working with small components and fasteners
• A basic understanding of electronics, wiring and electronic components
• The ability to follow technical instructions, diagrams or drawings carefully
• Good attention to detail and a methodical approach to work
• Experience with soldering or an interest and ability to learn
• Some experience using multimeters or other basic electrical test equipment
• Good problem-solving skills and the confidence to flag something when it doesn’t look right
• A willingness to document their work accurately
• A practical, reliable and hands-on approach

Most importantly, we want someone who takes pride in their work. If something doesn’t fit properly, a cable is routed badly or an instruction doesn’t make sense, we want you to notice it and speak up rather than simply carry on.

Nice to have

Experience in any of the following would be useful, but isn't essential:

• Electronics assembly or repair
• Scientific or laboratory equipment
• Electromechanical assembly
• PCB or SMD soldering
• Cable preparation, crimping and connector assembly
• 3D printing, CNC machining or laser cutting
• CAD software such as Fusion 360
• Prototype development
• Low-volume manufacturing
• Testing, inspection or quality control

Who this role could suit

You don’t need a degree or a traditional engineering background.

We’d be interested in hearing from people coming from apprenticeships, technical college, electronics repair, manufacturing or production technician roles, engineering technician roles, lab technician work, field service, prototyping, maker projects or other hands-on technical backgrounds.

If you’ve built, repaired or modified electronics, machinery, instruments or other technical equipment and can demonstrate that you work carefully and methodically, we’d like to hear from you.

You’ll be joining a small team where you can see the direct impact of your work. Designs will evolve, prototypes will change and occasionally something simply won’t work the first time.

We’re looking for someone who enjoys that environment: practical, adaptable and happy to solve problems, while still maintaining high standards and keeping their work organised and documented.

The role will be primarily on-site in Newcastle upon Tyne due to the hands-on nature of instrument assembly and testing.

Pay: Up to £27,000.00 per year
