Healthcare Scientist Assistant
Location: Ulster Hospital, Upper Newtownards Road
Hours: Full-time, 37.5 hours (3 shift pattern to cover 8am to 8pm)
Pay Rate: £12.75 per hour
JOB SUMMARY
To support Biomedical Scientists in providing a professional Laboratory service to users and clients. The post holder will work as an integral member of the Laboratory team and be responsible for a wide range of tasks to support/assist all laboratory disciplines provide a high quality laboratory service. In particular they will work within specimen reception to help deliver an efficient and effective laboratory reception service. Post holder will be required to participate in a 24/7 service which may include extended working over days, nights, weekends and Public holidays.
MAIN DUTIES
- Receive, sort, prepare, and process laboratory samples for analysis, ensuring accuracy and compliance with laboratory procedures.
- Enter and verify patient and test information on laboratory computer systems.
- Identify and resolve sample issues, escalating where necessary and communicating with service users regarding sample suitability.
- Package and dispatch samples to external laboratories, ensuring correct handling and timely transportation.
- Maintain laboratory equipment, consumables, and stock levels, reporting any issues or shortages.
- Assist with specimen reception, archiving, scanning, report distribution, and responding to telephone and face-to-face enquiries.
- Prepare laboratory solutions and support specialist sample collections as required.
- Carry out housekeeping duties, including cleaning equipment and work areas, waste disposal, and maintaining a safe and organised laboratory environment.
- Work across all laboratory disciplines, prioritising workload to support efficient service delivery and patient care.
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
5 GCSEs, 3 at C or higher for Science, Maths and English
