Captain – Class 5 Passenger Vessel (River Thames)

The Role

Thames Party Boats is looking for an experienced, confident and safety-conscious Captain to take command of our Class 5 passenger vessel on the River Thames.

This is an opportunity to lead vessel operations on one of the world's most iconic waterways, combining professional navigation with the responsibility of delivering safe and memorable experiences for our passengers.

Operating on the Thames requires excellent vessel-handling skills, sound judgement and the ability to remain calm under pressure in a busy, tidal environment. We are looking for someone who takes pride in maintaining high safety standards, leading a crew and ensuring the vessel operates safely and efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

• Safe Navigation: Command the vessel safely on the River Thames, accounting for tides, river traffic, weather conditions and navigational hazards.
• Safety and Compliance: Maintain high safety standards and ensure compliance with applicable MCA and Port of London Authority regulations and vessel operating procedures.
• Passenger Safety: Ensure the safety of all passengers and crew throughout each voyage, including emergency preparedness and safety briefings.
• Crew Leadership: Lead and coordinate crew members, ensuring effective teamwork and professional standards on board.
• Vessel Checks and Maintenance: Carry out routine vessel inspections, complete safety checks, identify defects and coordinate necessary maintenance.
• Passenger Experience: Maintain a professional and welcoming environment while ensuring passenger safety remains the priority.
• Operational Readiness: Ensure the vessel is prepared for scheduled charters, private parties and corporate events.

Essential Requirements

• A valid Tier 1, Level 2 Boatmaster's Licence (BML) with the relevant qualifications and passenger endorsements required to operate the vessel.
• Proven experience skippering passenger vessels, ideally within a busy, tidal environment.
• A valid Local Knowledge Endorsement (LKE) for the River Thames, where required for the vessel's operating area.
• A valid ML5 or ENG1 medical certificate, as applicable to the licence and role.
• Strong knowledge of navigation, vessel handling, maritime safety and emergency procedures.
• Excellent leadership, communication and decision-making skills.
• A responsible and professional approach to passenger safety and regulatory compliance.

Working Pattern

This is a full-time position requiring flexibility to work evenings, weekends and bank holidays, particularly during busy event periods.

As our vessel operates in the events and hospitality sector, availability for late-night charters and weekend operations is essential.

Candidates should be based in London or be willing to relocate or commute reliably to the operating location.
