Full job description

Experienced Bricklayer / General Builder

Cobie & Co Construction Ltd
Sheffield | Nottingham | South Yorkshire & Surrounding Areas
7:45am–4pm | Full-Time | Long-Term Position

We're looking for an exceptional Bricklayer / General Builder who wants to be valued for being good at their trade.

Cobie & Co Construction Ltd is a growing construction and property development company delivering refurbishments, HMOs, care properties, extensions and full property developments.

We're building a team around high standards, professionalism and good people.

We're now looking for a highly competent Bricklayer / General Builder who takes genuine pride in their workmanship, has strong experience in structural alterations, extensions and general building, and wants to become an important part of our growing team.

This isn't a position where "that'll do" will do.

We want someone who understands building work properly, can think ahead, work independently and take responsibility for delivering a quality job from start to finish.

In return, we offer consistent work, good regular pay, performance bonuses, progression and an environment where quality workmanship is recognised and rewarded.

The Role

Your primary trade must be bricklaying and general building, and your standard needs to be high.

You'll work across varied residential and commercial projects, including extensions, structural alterations, property conversions, refurbishments and general building works.

We're looking for somebody who is confident undertaking substantial building work, not simply laying bricks.

You should be highly competent in:

  • Bricklaying and blockwork, including cavity walls, internal and external walls, piers, returns and detailed masonry work
  • Single and double-storey extensions, from foundations and substructure through to superstructure and roof level
  • Structural knock-throughs, including forming openings in load-bearing walls and preparing for steel installations
  • RSJ and structural steel installations, including correct bearing preparation, padstones and working to structural engineer specifications
  • Groundworks and foundations, including excavation, concrete foundations, footings and oversite preparation
  • Setting out buildings, walls, openings and extensions accurately from drawings
  • DPCs, DPMs, cavity trays, wall ties, lintels and insulation installed correctly
  • Forming new door and window openings and making good existing openings
  • Alterations to existing masonry, including toothed brickwork, repointing and remedial repairs
  • Structural alterations to existing properties, including chimney breast removals where appropriately designed and supported
  • Concrete works, floor slabs, screeding preparation and associated building works
  • Understanding structural drawings, building regulations and construction specifications
  • Planning materials, coordinating labour and completing works efficiently
  • Working alongside other trades to deliver clean, accurate and professional finishes

Extensions and structural alterations are particularly important.

We need someone who understands the construction process, from excavation and foundations through to structural openings, masonry, steelwork and getting a building ready for follow-on trades.

You should understand the importance of temporary works, structural support, correct installation methods and following engineer specifications.

We're looking for someone who can be trusted to take ownership of the building elements of a project without needing constant supervision.

All structural works must be undertaken in accordance with approved designs, appropriate temporary works arrangements and relevant building regulations.

Additional Trade Skills – Highly Desirable

Additional trade skills would be a significant advantage, particularly:

  • Drainage and underground services, including foul and surface water drainage, pipe laying, inspection chambers and correct falls
  • Plastering, including boarding, skimming, patch repairs and making good following structural alterations
  • Groundworks, including excavation, drainage trenches, concrete works and external levels
  • Roofing, including roof structures, felt, battens, tiling and associated repairs
  • Joinery, particularly first-fix carpentry, timber structures, studwork and floor joists
  • Rendering, including external wall preparation and finishing
  • Paving and external works, including patios, paths, driveways and landscaping
  • General property refurbishment, including demolition, preparation and making good

Drainage and plastering experience would be especially attractive, as these skills regularly complement the building works we undertake.

You don't need to be everything to everyone.

We'd rather have somebody exceptional at bricklaying and general building with useful secondary skills than somebody average at six different trades.

However, someone who can competently undertake multiple aspects of a building project will be particularly valuable to our team, and we'll recognise that.

The Person

Skill gets you through the door. Attitude, reliability and standards keep you here.

We're looking for somebody who is:

Highly skilled. Organised. Punctual. Honest. Presentable. Reliable. Professional.

Someone who can turn up to a project, understand what needs doing and get on with it.

Someone who can read drawings, work out materials, plan ahead and identify potential problems before they become expensive mistakes.

Someone who understands the importance of accuracy, structural integrity, good workmanship and leaving a job properly finished.

Someone who keeps their tools, materials and working area organised.

Someone who can be trusted in a client's home or on a development site.

Someone who communicates problems early rather than covering them up.

Someone who works efficiently without sacrificing quality.

And someone who wants to keep improving rather than believing they've already learned everything.

You'll represent Cobie & Co Construction Ltd whenever you're on a project, so how you communicate and conduct yourself matters just as much as the finished work.

We're a growing company, and we want people who can grow with us.

Hours & Travel

Working hours: 7:45am–4pm.

Punctuality matters to us. 7:45 means ready to work at 7:45.

Our projects are across Sheffield, Nottingham, South Yorkshire and surrounding areas, so you must be genuinely comfortable travelling throughout these locations.

Travel provisions apply for longer-distance projects.

What We Offer

We're demanding about standards, but we believe that should work both ways.

If you're good at what you do, reliable and consistently deliver for the company, we want you to feel valued for it.

We offer:

  • Good, consistent and reliable pay
  • Strong pipeline of organised work
  • Performance-related bonuses
  • Pay reviews based on ability and contribution
  • Opportunities to develop additional trade skills
  • Varied projects, including extensions, conversions and full refurbishments
  • Professional working environment
  • A strong team culture
  • Long-term job security for the right person
  • Genuine progression into lead builder, site supervisor and management positions
  • Opportunity to take greater responsibility as the company grows

Our approach is simple:

Value received, value returned.

The people who bring the most skill, reliability, attitude and value to the company should see that reflected in what they earn and the opportunities they're given.

If you can independently manage the building elements of a project, solve problems, coordinate with other trades and consistently deliver exceptional workmanship, we want to reward that ability.

Requirements

  • Time-served and highly competent bricklayer / general builder
  • Proven experience in extensions and structural alterations
  • Strong experience in brickwork, blockwork and general masonry
  • Confident undertaking structural knock-throughs and working around steel installations
  • Good understanding of foundations, DPCs, DPMs and building construction
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings and structural specifications
  • Understanding of building regulations and safe working practices
  • Ability to work independently and plan work effectively
  • NVQ Level 2/3 in Bricklaying or equivalent proven experience
  • Drainage, plastering or other secondary trade experience highly desirable
  • Own professional tools
  • Own suitable van
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Two work references
  • Photos/examples of previous work, particularly extensions and structural alterations
  • Professional and presentable with clients
  • Reliable, organised and punctual

CSCS is not required.

If you normally work with a labourer/improver as your number two, we're also open to discussing this.

Who This Role Is For

This position will suit somebody who is genuinely good at their trade and knows it, but wants somewhere they can do more with that ability.

Maybe you're tired of being paid the same regardless of the standard you produce.

Maybe you're tired of poor organisation, poor culture or working alongside people who don't care.

Or perhaps you're an experienced bricklayer who's developed into a well-rounded builder and wants the opportunity to take ownership of larger, more interesting projects.

We're looking for someone who can be trusted to build an extension, undertake structural alterations, manage their work properly and deliver high standards without constant supervision or unnecessary return visits.

We have high standards and we'll expect them to be met.

In return, we'll provide good regular work, good pay, bonuses, progression and a team culture where the right people are genuinely valued.

If you're an experienced Bricklayer / General Builder who takes pride in quality workmanship, understands construction properly and wants to push yourself further, we want to hear from you.
