Derwentside College is one of the top performing colleges in the region for its learner and employer satisfaction. We are an ambitious organisation and as a large provider of apprenticeships we are leading the way in delivering a range of outstanding services to learners and employers.
The Opportunity
We are currently offering an exciting opportunity for a dedicated and knowledgeable Construction Lecturer to join our team. If you are passionate about the construction industry and committed to supporting learners in reaching their full potential, we would love to hear from you. Whether you are an experienced educator or a skilled tradesperson seeking a transition from industry to achieve a better work-life balance, what matters most to us are your values, enthusiasm, and commitment to sharing your expertise. Your industry knowledge is invaluable in helping our learners succeed and thrive in their chosen careers.
What you will do:
The person appointed will play an instrumental role in this high-performing department. You will be passionate about construction and extremely knowledgeable in general construction techniques. Those with previous lecturing experience will have a track record of excellence in assessing and teaching that will allow you to deliver General Construction to full-time learners and apprentices. You yourself will be qualified in Bricklaying or Groundworks to Level 3 or above and you will have the industry experience that allows you to contextualise you’re teaching with specific examples. You will also be able to evidence professional development that gives you currency in the sector and will hold, or be working towards, a relevant teaching or assessing qualification, or be willing to take further training to achieve this goal.
As a Lecturer, you will be responsible for student learning, curriculum development, pastoral care, and administration. Sharing your skills and knowledge, you will develop and maintain high levels of student retention and attendance. In this role, you will deliver engaging and practical lessons in general construction, develop and update curriculum materials to reflect current industry standards, and provide pastoral care and support to students, fostering a positive learning environment. You will monitor and improve student retention and attendance rates, assess student progress and provide constructive feedback, and collaborate with colleagues to enhance the department's performance. Additionally, you will maintain workshop equipment and ensure a safe working environment.
To be successful in this role, you should have extensive knowledge and experience in general construction, a passion for teaching and mentoring students, and a relevant teaching or assessing qualification (or willingness to obtain one). You should be able to deliver high-quality training both in the classroom and on-site, possess strong organisational and administrative skills, and demonstrate a commitment to continuous professional development.
What’s in it for you?
- 46 days annual leave entitlement plus statutory bank holidays
- Christmas closure days
- Automatic entry to the Teachers’ Pension Scheme
- Annual staff wellbeing days
- Continuous professional development
- Free on-site parking
