Full job description
Are you a qualified youth work professional who believes in the transformative power of working with young people? Do you want to pass on that belief to the next generation of practitioners? If so, we think you will feel right at home here.
As our new Youth Work Lecturer, you will prepare learners for professional practice in youth and community work, delivering high-quality teaching on JNC-recognised programmes that develop not just knowledge and skills, but confidence, values and a genuine vocation for the sector.
Based at our Colindale campus, you will work within the wider Service Industries curriculum area, contributing to course delivery, quality assurance and learner progression. You will support learners with diverse needs and backgrounds, many of whom are on a journey of real personal development, helping them move on into employment, further study or professional registration in youth work.
About Barnet and Southgate College
We change lives, empower individuals and connect communities.
We change lives, empower individuals and connect communities.
We are an ambitious, forward-thinking further education college in North London, proud to serve diverse communities across Barnet, Southgate and beyond. Our 2030 Vision is bold: to be a leading provider of learning and skills development, fostering exceptional educational experiences, driven by innovation, collaboration and excellence.
Our Service Industries department brings together a range of vocational programmes united by a common purpose: preparing learners for careers that make a difference in their communities. The Youth Work provision sits at the heart of that mission. You will be joining a collaborative team with strong curriculum leadership, where your professional expertise and industry knowledge are genuinely valued, and where you will have real input into shaping the programmes you deliver.
Key Responsibilities
What You'll Be Doing
No two days look the same, but here is a flavour of what you will be getting involved in:
- Inspiring teaching: Deliver high-quality, inclusive sessions on JNC-aligned youth work programmes at Levels 2 to 6, developing learners' professional knowledge, ethical practice and personal confidence.
- Learner success: Track progress, provide meaningful feedback and support learners to achieve their qualifications and take their next steps into employment, apprenticeships or higher education.
Curriculum contribution: Work collaboratively with curriculum leaders to keep programmes current, compliant and engaging, contributing to course development and quality improvement. - Assessment and quality: Manage assessment, internal quality assurance and verification processes to awarding body and JNC standards, with accurate tracking of learner evidence.
Pastoral support: Act as a personal tutor and mentor, supporting learner attendance, wellbeing and retention through timely intervention and collaboration with student support services. - External partnerships: Work with youth services, employers, voluntary and statutory agencies to strengthen progression pathways and bring real-world relevance to learning.
- Enrichment and development: Play an active role in quality assurance, safeguarding, health and safety and enrichment activity across the provision.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
What You'll Bring
We are looking for someone who combines professional youth work experience with a genuine commitment to learner success.
Essential
- A JNC-recognised Professional Youth Work qualification (e.g. Level 6 BA (Hons) Youth and Community Work, or equivalent recognised by NYA/ETS)
- A teaching qualification (e.g. PGCE/CertEd/DET) or genuine commitment to achieving one within an agreed timeframe
- Recent and relevant professional experience in youth work, community work or related services with children and young people
- Experience supporting learners with diverse needs, including those who are vulnerable, disengaged or facing barriers to learning
- Strong understanding of youth work values, ethics, safeguarding, and equality, diversity and inclusion
- Ability to plan and deliver engaging, inclusive teaching that supports learner achievement and progression
- Effective communication skills and ability to build positive professional relationships with learners and colleagues
- English and Maths at Level 2 or above (or equivalent)

- Experience of course leadership, subject leadership or curriculum development
- An assessor or IQA qualification, or willingness to work towards one
