Full job description

LOCATION: Danbury, Essex

JOB TYPE: Full time, permanent

SALARY: Dependent on experience

Trainee Heritage Building Craftsman

We are a long-established Essex based construction company, who carry out a broad spectrum of works from specialised restoration works to churches and listed buildings, to mainstream construction and insurance repairs.

Bakers of Danbury are recruiting our craftsman for the future and we are now seeking a Trainee Building Craftsman specialising in stone, brick and plaster who will work within our Church and Heritage Building Department.

We offer a full-time position where you will be working as part of the onsite team gaining practical hands-on construction experience. This will combine with entry onto our bespoke Heritage Training Programme allowing you to further develop your craftsmanship skills within a recognised training programme.

As a heritage construction company, the work and training you will be involved in will cover traditional works such as stonework, lime plastering and mortars, brickwork repairs, joinery and other skills necessary to specialise in the conservation and repair of historical buildings, churches and ancient monuments.

This is an excellent opportunity for those who are looking to develop their skills and progress their careers.

Overview

Ideally you should already be working in or towards a trade or craftsman role suited for stone working, brick works and wet trades. You may be starting out in construction or already working as a tradesperson – looking to focus your skills by working on fascinating and rewarding historic buildings. Alternatively, you may be working in a labouring/semi-skilled position and looking to progress to craftsman status.

Skills and attributes required

You should be practically minded, self-motivated, committed, and keen to develop and learn about the built environment. You should also possess an interest for traditional techniques and historical buildings.

You will need to have a flexible approach and attitude as the position will require the candidate to work at various locations throughout the East of England.

Expectations

You will be expected to work as follows:

  • Perform general labour tasks as needed
  • Follow safety guidelines and maintain a clean work environment
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritise tasks
  • A willingness to learn
  • Good problem solving skills
  • The ability to take direction from supervisors
  • Collaborate with team members to complete projects efficiently and effectively
  • Positively represent Bakers of Danbury by being courteous and well-mannered

The Bakers Heritage Training Programme

The position will give you access to our own Heritage Training Programme. This has been designed for those individuals who are either beginning their journey in the construction industry or seeking to advance their careers in new areas. It places a specific emphasis on developing the skills required to work on the restoration and conservation of historical buildings and churches. Practical experience is fundamental and so the training programme is built around onsite based NVQ’s and externally accredited Bakers training modules. It will lead to becoming a Bakers of Danbury Hertiage building craftsperson, incorporating an NVQ Level 2 in Façade Preservation.

Salary and benefits

  • Hours of work – Monday-Friday. 7.30am – 4.30pm
  • A competitive salary as an hourly wage – this will vary depending upon current skill levels.
  • 20 days annual leave with the addition of statutory bank holidays
  • Automatic enrolment into the workplace pension scheme
  • Inclusion onto the Bakers Accredited Heritage Training Programme
  • Opportunities for career growth and advancement within the company
  • Support and guidance
  • PPE provided

We promote a positive working environment and a great team spirit which we support through team building and social events throughout the year. As this position includes the Heritage Training Programme – you may be eligible for study leave dependent on the modules taken.
Expected trainee duration is dependent upon your current skills level.
