Location: Newton Abbot, Devon (Hybrid / Flexible Working)
Job Type: Permanent, Part-Time — 3 Days per Week (24 Hours)
Salary: £35,000–£40,000 FTE (£21,000–£24,000 actual salary) plus performance-related bonuses
About Edleigh Construction
Edleigh Construction Ltd is an established, growing construction company based in Newton Abbot, Devon, and a proud member of the Federation of Master Builders.
We specialise in residential extensions, renovations, structural alterations, large scale property refurbishments and commercial building projects throughout South Devon and the surrounding areas.
As part of an exciting restructure and our plans for future growth, we are looking for an experienced Construction Estimator & Business Development Manager to join our team.
This is a key appointment within our business. Working directly alongside our Managing Director, you will take ownership of the pre-construction process, from generating enquiries and meeting prospective customers through to preparing accurate quotations and securing profitable projects.
We are looking for someone who wants to become an important part of our company's future, with the opportunity to grow their role, responsibilities and earnings as the business develops.
The Role
This is a varied, hands-on commercial position combining construction estimating, customer relationships and business development.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Attending customer appointments and site surveys to assess proposed construction works.
- Understanding customer requirements, taking measurements and identifying technical considerations.
- Preparing accurate and detailed quotations, including labour, materials, subcontractors, plant and project costs.
- Reviewing architectural drawings, specifications and other construction documentation.
- Obtaining and comparing supplier and subcontractor quotations.
- Developing relationships with architects, surveyors, property developers, landlords and other potential clients to generate new business.
- Following up enquiries and quotations, negotiating with customers and helping secure profitable contracts.
- Maintaining an organised sales pipeline and providing regular updates on enquiries, quotations and conversion rates.
- Preparing project-specific Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) and other relevant pre-construction documentation using appropriate software.
- Liaising with our Site Manager to ensure projects are properly scoped, priced and handed over for delivery.
- Working closely with the Managing Director to review pricing, profitability, commercial opportunities and business growth.
About You
We are particularly interested in candidates with a strong practical understanding of the construction industry who are confident managing customer relationships and preparing estimates independently.
You may currently be working as a Construction Estimator, Contracts Manager, Site Manager, Quantity Surveyor or Construction Business Development Manager.
Equally, you may be an experienced builder or construction business owner looking to move into a less physically demanding, more flexible role while continuing to use your industry knowledge.
Essential requirements:
- Proven experience within the building or construction industry.
- Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, labour requirements and subcontractor costs.
- Ability to assess building projects and prepare accurate estimates independently.
- Confidence attending customer appointments and discussing proposed building works.
- Good commercial awareness and an understanding of project profitability.
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office, spreadsheets and the ability to use digital estimating and project management software.
- Excellent communication, organisational and customer relationship skills.
- Ability to work independently, manage priorities and take ownership of responsibilities.
- Full UK driving licence and ability to travel to customer appointments across South Devon.
Desirable experience:
- Previous business development or sales experience within construction.
- Existing relationships with architects, developers or other construction professionals.
- Experience preparing construction RAMS and health and safety documentation.
- Experience using estimating software, CRM systems or construction management platforms.
- Experience managing or operating a small building company.
Working Arrangements
We recognise the importance of flexibility and work-life balance.
The position is initially for three days per week (24 hours), with flexibility around working days and hours to accommodate business requirements and personal commitments.
We envisage:
- One agreed day per week working alongside the Managing Director at our home-based office in Newton Abbot, reviewing enquiries, estimates, quotations and upcoming projects.
- Remaining working time undertaken flexibly from home, attending customer appointments, carrying out site surveys or meeting potential business partners.
- Opportunities to increase working hours as the business grows, subject to mutual agreement.
This is a role suited to someone who is self-motivated, organised and comfortable working independently without needing to be office-based every day.
Salary & Benefits
- £35,000–£40,000 per annum full-time equivalent, depending on experience.
- Actual salary of £21,000–£24,000 per annum based on three days per week.
- Additional performance-related bonuses linked to securing profitable projects, generating new business and customer payments.
- 28 days' annual leave including bank holidays (full-time equivalent, pro rata for part-time hours).
- Flexible hybrid working arrangements.
- Company pension.
- Business mileage reimbursement.
- Laptop and access to relevant estimating and project management software.
- Opportunity for increased earnings, hours and responsibilities as the company expands.
