Job Overview

We are recruiting a full-time lecturer to teach on our University of Derby hospitality degrees: the BA (Hons) International Hospitality Management and the BA (Hons) International Hospitality Management with Foundation Year. Teaching takes place in person at our Rainham campus.

You will teach, assess and tutor students from the Foundation Year right through to the final year. Many of our students come to us from non-traditional routes, so we are looking for someone who enjoys teaching, is patient and organised, and can bring their own hospitality industry experience into the classroom.

Note : Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. Applicants must have the right to work in the UK.

Salary : Negotiable - depending on experience

Delivery: Face to face, on campus

The Programmes

Both degrees are awarded by the University of Derby. The three-year honours route runs from Level 4 to Level 6. The four-year route adds a Foundation Year that builds study skills and confidence before students start Level 4. Some modules are shared with our BA (Hons) International Tourism Management, so you may teach mixed hospitality and tourism groups.

Year 3 (Level 6)

• Strategic Management and Business Improvement
• Innovation and Concept Development in Hospitality

• Independent Project (40 credits)
• Option: Consumer Behaviour

What you will do

• Plan and teach lectures and seminars across the Foundation Year and Levels 4 to 6.
• May be required to prepare teaching materials, case studies and online resources in line with the University of Derby module specifications.
• Lead one or more modules, keeping delivery and assessment consistent for students.
• Set and mark assessments, give clear and timely feedback, and take part in moderation and assessment boards.
• Contribute to programme reviews, partnership quality processes and visits from the University's link tutor and external examiners.
• Act as a personal tutor, keep an eye on attendance and progress, and follow up when students need help.
• Supervise final year independent projects.
• Build links with hotels, restaurants and other hospitality employers for guest talks, site visits and live projects.
• Help with student recruitment, interviews, induction and open days.
• Keep your own professional development up to date and take on other reasonable duties set by the Programme Leader.

What we are looking for

Essential

• A Master's degree in hospitality, tourism or a closely related subject, and a good first degree.
• A teaching qualification or Fellowship of Advance HE, or a willingness to work towards one.
• Experience of teaching in higher education, ideally on hospitality or tourism programmes.
• Hands-on experience in the hospitality industry, for example in hotels, food and beverage,
• resorts, revenue management or events.
• Experience of marking student work and giving useful feedback.
• Good communication, organisation and IT skills, including use of a virtual learning environment.
• A collaborative way of working and a commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.

Desirable

• A PhD, or progress towards one, in a relevant subject.
• Experience of module leadership, particularly in a UK university partnership.
• Experience of teaching any of the modules listed above.
• Experience of supervising undergraduate research projects or teaching Foundation Year students.
• Membership of the Institute of Hospitality, Advance HE, the Chartered Management Institute or another relevant professional body.
