Full job description
Job Purpose:
The Surveying Technician will provide essential support to surveyors and engineers by conducting diagnostic testing, collecting data, and assisting in the preparation of site records, for reports. The role involves using various surveying equipment and technologies to diagnose and record distress, building dimensions, and infrastructure details. The technician will work under the supervision of senior surveyors and engineers to ensure accuracy and precision in all surveying tasks.
Key Responsibilities:
Fieldwork:
· Assist in conducting structures, buildings, and infrastructure surveys using a variety of surveying equipment.
· Take cores and dust samples for laboratory analysis.
· Use the company’s range of diagnostic test equipment.
· Record defects on drawings and liaise with our AutoCAD department.
Data Collection and Processing:
· Collect, process, and manage site data obtained from surveys for use in various engineering, construction, and development projects.
· Input and update survey data when asked to do so by the surveyor / engineer.
· Ensure data accuracy and compliance with project specifications and quality standards.
Survey Equipment Operation and Maintenance:
· Operate and maintain a variety of surveying tools and equipment.
· Perform regular calibration and minor maintenance of surveying instruments to ensure functionality and precision.
· Troubleshoot and resolve basic technical issues with equipment in the field.
Support for Senior Surveyors / Engineers:
· Work closely with senior surveyors and project managers to complete surveys according to project timelines and specifications.
· Assist in setting up and managing surveying equipment in challenging environments, including urban, rural, and construction site locations.
Compliance and Safety:
· Ensure all surveys are conducted in accordance with relevant industry standards, regulations, and best practices.
· Follow health and safety procedures while working on-site, especially in hazardous environments or high-traffic areas.
· Maintain up-to-date knowledge of surveying technologies, regulations, and industry advancements.
Key Skills and Competencies:
Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with surveying equipment.
Attention to Detail: Strong accuracy in measurements, data recording, and information preparation.
Problem Solving: Ability to identify and resolve issues related to survey tasks, data discrepancies, or challenging site conditions.
Teamwork: Capable of collaborating effectively with senior surveyors, engineers, contractors, and other project stakeholders.
Time Management: Ability to work efficiently under deadlines, balancing multiple tasks across various projects.
Qualifications and Experience:
Essential:
· Certificate/Diploma in Surveying, NDT, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
· Practical experience in surveying, or civil engineering projects.
· Knowledge of surveying methods and techniques.
· Proficiency in using computers, tablets and survey / NDT software.
· Experience with survey instruments.
Desirable:
· Experience in construction, or civil engineering projects.
· Knowledge of relevant construction / Health & Safety laws and regulations.
Additional Requirements:
· Valid driver's license and ability to travel to various project sites – company vehicle supplied.
· Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions and on construction sites.
· Ability to lift and carry surveying equipment and work in physically demanding environments.
· Flexibility to work outside regular hours when necessary to meet project deadlines.
Physical Requirements:
· Capable of walking, standing, and carrying equipment for extended periods while conducting fieldwork.
· Ability to work in varying outdoor conditions, including in rugged terrain, at heights, or in confined spaces.
