About the role
This is a temporary cleaning position expected to run for approximately one year.
The role involves cleaning welfare cabins and site facilities connected with work taking place on or around an HMPPS site. The work will include general cleaning duties such as cleaning toilets, washrooms, kitchen/rest areas, welfare areas, floors, surfaces, and emptying bins.
Because of the location and nature of the site, applicants must already hold valid EL1 clearance and be comfortable working in a secure or controlled environment.
Cleaning equipment and materials will be provided.
Essential clearance requirement
Applicants must already hold valid EL1 clearance.
Please do not apply unless you currently hold valid EL1 clearance, as this is a specific requirement for this position.
Applications from applicants who do not currently hold valid EL1 clearance will not be progressed.
Travel requirement
Applicants must be able to travel to and from the site reliably for every shift.
You are strongly advised to check the location carefully before applying to ensure that the role is suitable and that you can travel to and from the site without difficulty.
Who this role is suitable for
This role is suitable for someone seeking regular part-time hours on a temporary contract.
It may suit someone who already has experience working on HMPPS, prison, construction, welfare, or secure sites and who is looking for a part-time cleaning role.
This role is not suitable for applicants seeking full-time employment. Applications that indicate a requirement for full-time hours will not be progressed.
Recruitment & onboarding process
Initial contact will be by phone.
Suitable applicants may be asked to discuss their current EL1 clearance status and previous experience working on secure sites.
Successful candidates will be asked to complete a pre-employment questionnaire, which includes:
- Personal details
- Confirmation of right to work in the UK
- Uploading required identification and proof of address documents
- Providing contact details for two employment references, preferably previous employers
A smartphone with mobile data and location services is required, as the company uses a location-based attendance and lone-worker safety system.
The company also uses WhatsApp for work-related communication, and applicants must be willing to use this.
All applicants must be able to provide proof of eligibility to work in the UK, satisfactory employment references, and confirmation of valid EL1 clearance before starting work.
How the work is organised
The work will be carried out in line with the site’s cleaning requirements and any access arrangements in place for the HMPPS site.
The role is expected to involve cleaning welfare cabins and associated facilities. Toilets, washrooms, kitchens, rest areas, floors, touchpoints, and bins are likely to be regular priorities.
The exact cleaning schedule may be adjusted once the site layout, number of users, and welfare facilities have been confirmed.
This role is not “job and knock”. Staff are expected to work productively for the full shift.

- Clean welfare cabins and associated facilities
- Maintain good cleaning standards across assigned areas
- Use cleaning products and equipment safely
