Full job description

Café Assistant (FOH Assistant)

Reports to: FOH and Events Supervisor for day-to-day matters; café management overall.

Role overview: The Café Assistant is a customer-facing team member who provides excellent service and supports efficient front-of-house operations. The role follows the café's procedures for service, hygiene, allergen communication, cash handling and safe working. It is a hands-on position.

Key responsibilities

  • Complete service tasks professionally, maintaining a calm and efficient atmosphere and supporting the FOH and Events Supervisor with effective table flow.
  • Welcome and greet customers promptly and courteously. Manage walk-ins and bookings as directed, recording the required details accurately.
  • Take orders accurately and communicate them clearly to the kitchen. Confirm allergy information when taking and serving an order, and refer any uncertainty immediately.
  • Serve food and drinks safely, using trays, warning customers about hot products and completing check-backs. Maintain service standards throughout the customer's visit.
  • Maintain FOH presentation by clearing and resetting tables, keeping counters and service stations tidy, replenishing condiments, napkins and disposables, and keeping customer toilets presentable.
  • Support cake and retail displays by keeping cabinets clean, ensuring that label cards are present and correct, rotating stock using FIFO and removing out-of-date or substandard products as instructed. Report problems promptly.
  • Operate tills and process payments accurately. Follow cash-handling rules and obtain approval from a supervisor or manager for refunds and voids where required.
  • Complete allocated opening and closing duties, including cleaning, restocking, recording wastage and completing required checklists and sign-offs.
  • Support large bookings and events, including afternoon-tea setup and service, as directed. Ensure that dietary variations are clearly identified and cross-contact is prevented.
  • Report hazards, near misses, complaints and equipment faults promptly to the FOH and Events Supervisor or café management, and record incidents in the appropriate log.
  • Follow procedures as described and as per the operations manual.
  • Help ensure EHO, Hygiene and Safety requirements are met by following agreed procedures.
  • Support other departments, including retail and the garden centre, when directed by café management.

Job meet national minimum wage requirements for relevant age groups.

Pay: £10.85-£12.71 per hour
