Full job description

About Us:

Thomson’s of Tranent is a proud, well-established family business that has been serving our local community for years. Our vibrant premises bring together three essential hubs under one roof: a busy convenience store, a main local Post Office, and a welcoming cafe.

As the current owners, we are looking to take a well-deserved step back into semi-retirement. However, we aren't disappearing! We will still be working part-time within the business to support you. We are looking for a trustworthy, energetic, and highly capable Store Manager to take the reins, oversee day-to-day operations, and lead our team.

The Role:

This is not a back-office desk job. You will be a highly visible, "hands-on" leader. You will spend the vast majority of your time right where the action is—on the shop floor, serving customers on the tills, helping in the cafe, and managing the Post Office counter.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Floor Leadership: Lead by example by working directly on the tills, greeting customers, and maintaining a high standard of service.
  • Daily Operations: Oversee the smooth running of all three departments (Retail, Post Office, and Cafe).
  • Staff Management: Rota, manage, and motivate a small team of assistants, ensuring high morale and excellent productivity.
  • Stock & Compliance: Manage inventory levels, order stock, minimize waste, and ensure strict adherence to Post Office regulations and food hygiene standards.
  • Support the Owners: Work collaboratively with the semi-retired owners to maintain the community values the business was built on over many years.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Experience: Proven experience as a Store Manager, Assistant Manager, or Supervisor in a high-volume retail, convenience store, or hospitality environment.
  • Hands-on Attitude: A strong work ethic—you must be happy to get stuck into physical work, stock shelves, and operate tills for most of your shift.
  • Reliability & Trust: Outstanding honesty and reliability are critical, especially given the dual retail and financial/Post Office nature of the site.
  • Post Office Experience: Prior experience working within a UK Post Office is highly advantageous, though comprehensive training can be provided for the right candidate.
  • Flexibility: Ability to work a flexible schedule across a minimum 40-hour week, including opening/closing shifts and weekends.

Benefits:

  • Competitive salary of £36,000
  • Performance-based annual bonus of up to 10%–15%

Pay: £36,000.00 per year

Work Location: In person
