Company Description

A people person? Make a difference at home and in your community.

A friendly conversation. Time spent enjoying a favourite activity. The reassurance that someone you love is being safely supported while you take a much-needed break.

As a Care & Community Support Worker with our Preventative Breaks Service, you’ll help make these moments possible.

We’re looking for three caring, confident and proactive people to join Care By Us. You’ll support people in their own homes, giving their unpaid carers time to rest, attend appointments, see friends or focus on their own wellbeing.

You’ll also help more people discover the service. Alongside delivering care, you’ll get involved in local events, speak with community groups and build connections with unpaid carers who may not know support is available.

If you enjoy helping people, starting conversations and getting involved in your community, this could be a rewarding next step.

Where you’ll work

You’ll be employed through Care By Us Welham Green, delivering support wherever it is needed across Hertfordshire, including:

St Albans, Watford, Hemel Hempstead, Welwyn Garden City, Hatfield, Stevenage, Hertford, Ware, Bishop’s Stortford, Hitchin, Letchworth, Cheshunt, Broxbourne, Hoddesdon, Potters Bar, Borehamwood, Rickmansworth, Bushey and surrounding areas.

This is a county-wide role. You must be a driver with access to your own vehicle and be comfortable travelling throughout Hertfordshire as part of your working day.

  • Guaranteed hours and contract

We’re specifically looking for people who want full-time employment and can commit to 40 hours each week.

You’ll receive 40 guaranteed contracted hours per week across care delivery and community engagement activity.

These are six-month fixed-term contracts ending April 2027, with the opportunity to become permanent. We’ll discuss working patterns and service requirements during recruitment.

Job Description

Provide care that gives carers a break

Unpaid carers dedicate time and energy to supporting someone close to them. Your role will give them the reassurance to step away, knowing that person is in caring hands.

Following individual care plans, you’ll:

  • Provide care and practical support that reflects each person’s needs, preferences and routines.
  • Offer companionship, conversation and meaningful activities.
  • Support personal care where required, maintaining dignity, privacy and choice.
  • Help people feel safe, comfortable and reassured while their carer is away.
  • Encourage independence and support people to do what they can for themselves.
  • Listen carefully, notice changes in wellbeing and report concerns appropriately.
  • Keep accurate records and communicate clearly with carers and your colleagues.

Help more unpaid carers find support

When you’re not delivering care visits, you’ll use allocated time to help raise awareness of the Preventative Breaks Service.

This could include:

  • Attending local events, community groups and activities.
  • Starting friendly conversations about the service and the support it offers.
  • Helping identify and reach unpaid carers who may not know where to turn.
  • Building relationships with local groups and community contacts.
  • Sharing service information clearly and helping people understand how to access support.
  • Bringing ideas and feedback to the team to help us reach more families.

Both care delivery and community engagement are central to this role. We’re looking for someone who feels comfortable supporting a person at home and talking with new people at a community event.

Qualifications

Kind, reliable and ready to get involved?

Previous care experience would be helpful, but we also value the skills you bring from other work, volunteering or supporting someone close to you.

Perhaps you’ve worked in customer service, hospitality or community support. If you’re a good listener, put people at ease and enjoy making a practical difference, we’d love to hear from you.

You’ll need:

  • Availability to work 40 contracted hours per week.
  • A driving licence and access to your own vehicle for work.
  • Willingness to travel across Hertfordshire.
  • A caring, respectful and approachable manner.
  • Confidence communicating with people from different backgrounds.
  • The ability to work independently, with support from your team.
  • A proactive approach to community engagement and promoting the service.
  • Reliability, organisation and flexibility as service needs change.
  • A willingness to learn and provide care in line with individual care plans.
  • The existing right to work in the UK.

Please note: we are unable to offer visa sponsorship for these positions.
