Stock Controller & Order Checker – Back Shift
Crescent Pharma – Sheffield National Distribution Centre
£14.50 per hour
Permanent | Full-time | 40 hours per week | Monday to Friday
Basic annual pay: £30,160
Shift: 13:00–22:00 Monday to Thursday; 11:00–20:00 Friday
40 paid working hours per week
Each shift includes:
- Two 15-minute breaks
- One 30-minute meal break
Breaks are taken at the scheduled times for your shift to ensure the warehouse operation remains properly covered.
All breaks are unpaid.
A stock control role where accuracy, problem solving and strong performance are recognised
Crescent Pharma is recruiting Stock Controllers & Order Checkers for our Sheffield National Distribution Centre.
We are building a high-performing warehouse team and want people who are accurate, organised, productive and capable of investigating and resolving problems rather than simply identifying them.
In return, we offer a strong basic rate of £14.50 per hour, guaranteed 40-hour working weeks, permanent weekday employment and clear opportunities to progress.
This is a dedicated stock control and order-checking role.
You will have two core responsibilities:
- Maintaining accurate, traceable warehouse stock through rolling counts, stock investigations and effective discrepancy resolution.
- Acting as an independent checker for orders completed by our warehouse picking team before they proceed to Goods Out and despatch.
You will work to clear, published performance standards covering accuracy, productivity, turnaround times, problem resolution and compliance. Our Sheffield operation supports the supply of medicines to pharmacies, hospitals and healthcare customers across the UK. Accurate stock records and effective independent checking are therefore critical parts of the operation.
The role
You will be responsible for:
- Completing scheduled rolling and cycle stock counts.
- Checking physical stock against warehouse system records.
- Verifying product codes, descriptions, quantities, batch numbers, expiry dates, stock status and warehouse locations.
- Identifying missing, surplus, incorrectly located, mixed or incorrectly recorded stock.
- Investigating stock discrepancies using system transactions, physical checks and warehouse records.
- Taking ownership of stock discrepancies through to resolution.
- Resolving routine stock discrepancies within agreed turnaround times.
- Escalating complex or significant discrepancies promptly where they cannot be immediately resolved.
- Ensuring stock corrections and adjustments are properly authorised and accurately recorded.
- Identifying recurring stock-control problems and helping determine their root cause.
- Supporting warehouse stocktakes, targeted recounts and inventory investigations.
- Maintaining accurate and traceable stock-control records.
- Independently checking completed customer orders before they proceed to Goods Out.
- Confirming the correct product, quantity, batch, expiry date, pack size and order information.
- Identifying picker errors and ensuring they are corrected before despatch.
- Recording checking results and errors accurately against the correct picker and order.
- Rechecking corrected orders where required.
- Preventing incorrect, incomplete or questionable orders from progressing to despatch.
- Completing checking activity efficiently so that orders continue to flow through the warehouse.
- Working closely with Pickers, Stock Replenishment, Goods In and Goods Out to resolve operational problems.
- Reporting damaged stock, product concerns and stock-location issues immediately.
- Maintaining product quality and traceability.
- Following warehouse, pharmaceutical, health & safety and operating procedures.
- Keeping your working area clean, safe and organised.
- Maintaining consistent and productive activity throughout your shift.
A key part of this position is problem solving. We do not simply want someone who can identify that two stock figures do not match. We want Stock Controllers who can investigate what has happened, establish the likely cause, resolve the problem correctly and help prevent the same issue from happening again.
Once fully trained and signed off as competent, your core standards will include:
Stock Control Accuracy
- Rolling counts and stock-control activity must be completed accurately and within the agreed timetable.
- Your own counting and recording accuracy will be measured against verified recounts and system information.
Rolling Count Completion
- 100% of allocated rolling counts completed within the required timeframe.
- Counts must be completed accurately and properly recorded rather than simply completed quickly.
Stock Discrepancy Resolution
Stock discrepancies must be investigated and resolved efficiently.
Performance will include:
- Speed of investigation.
- Accuracy of the investigation.
- Quality of the resolution.
- Completion within agreed turnaround times.
- Appropriate escalation where an issue cannot immediately be resolved.
- Clear recording of the cause and corrective action.
Order Checking Accuracy
Checking is a core responsibility of this role.
Orders presented by the picking team must be independently checked before proceeding to Goods Out.
Core checker standards will include:
- Orders checked accurately – 99.9%
- Picker errors correctly identified – minimum 99.9%
- Checker-created errors – 0
The checker must independently verify the order and must not rely solely on the picker confirming that it is correct.
Checking Productivity and Turnaround
Checking must be completed efficiently enough to maintain the flow of customer orders through the warehouse.
You will therefore be measured on:
- Orders checked.
- Order lines checked.
- Accuracy of checking.
- Orders completed within the agreed checking turnaround time.
- Outstanding checking backlog.
- Avoidable delays to Goods Out or despatch.
- Consistency of productive activity throughout the shift.
The role requires both accuracy and efficiency.
All stock counts, discrepancies, corrections and order checks must be properly recorded.
Performance will be reviewed regularly against objective warehouse system, checking, stock-control and attendance data.
Meeting the minimum standards is an expectation of the role.
Stock Controllers & Order Checkers will be assessed against objective performance measures including:
- Stock-control accuracy.
- Rolling count completion.
- Accuracy and speed of discrepancy resolution.
- Order-checking accuracy.
- Identification of picker errors.
- Checking productivity and turnaround.
- Quality and completeness of records.
- Consistency of working activity.
- Safety and procedure compliance.
What we offer
- £14.50 per hour basic rate
- Guaranteed 40 hours per week
- Permanent, full-time employment
- Fixed 13:00–22:00 Monday-to-Thursday and 11:00–20:00 Friday shift
- Two 15-minute breaks and one 30-minute break per shift (unpaid)
- No routine weekend working
- 20 days' annual leave plus bank holidays
- Structured induction and job-specific training
- Clear and objective performance measures
- Regular feedback and development
- Genuine opportunities to progress as the operation grows
Who we are looking for
We particularly want applicants with:
- Recent stock-control, inventory-control, warehouse-checking or similar experience.
- Experience completing stock counts or cycle counts.
- Experience investigating and resolving stock discrepancies.
- Experience working against measurable accuracy, productivity or turnaround targets.
- Strong numerical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent attention to detail, particularly around product codes, quantities, batches and locations.
- Experience using handheld scanners, warehouse management systems or ERP systems.
- The ability to review information logically and establish why a discrepancy has occurred.
- The confidence to challenge incorrect work and stop an order where something does not appear right.
- A strong attendance and punctuality record.
- Good basic literacy and numeracy.
- The ability to remain productive without continuous supervision.
- A responsible attitude when mistakes or problems occur.
- The ability to work calmly and accurately when the warehouse is busy.
- An interest in stable, long-term employment and progression.
Previous pharmaceutical or regulated warehouse experience is advantageous but not essential.
Is this the right environment for you?
This is a performance-led warehouse operation.
If you enjoy solving problems, take pride in accurate work, are comfortable being accountable for your decisions and want strong performance to be visible and recognised, this could be an excellent opportunity.
This position is particularly suited to someone who sees a stock discrepancy and wants to understand why it happened and how to fix it, rather than simply passing the problem to somebody else. The position is less likely to suit someone who does not want their performance measured, struggles with attendance or punctuality, avoids taking ownership of problems, requires continuous supervision to remain productive or prioritises speed over accuracy.
Stock Controllers & Order Checkers also provide an important independent control within our warehouse operation. You must therefore be comfortable identifying mistakes made by colleagues and ensuring they are properly corrected before an order is despatched.
We provide training, clear expectations and appropriate support. In return, we expect a professional attitude, strong attention to detail and consistent performance.
Recruitment process
Shortlisted applicants should expect:
- CV/application review
- Initial screening
- Site-based interview
If you are an experienced, accurate and reliable warehouse professional who enjoys stock control, investigating problems and ensuring customer orders are right before they leave the warehouse, we would like to hear from you.
Please apply with an up-to-date CV demonstrating your relevant warehouse, stock-control or order-checking experience.
Direct applicants only. No recruitment agency submissions.
