Full job description

Assistant General Manager/ GM in Training
The Ship, Wandsworth - Salary or hourly rate available depending on preference

We're looking for an experienced Young's Deputy Manager or General Manager in Training who can hit the ground running in one of the busiest pubs in the estate.

The Ship is famous for its huge summers and high-volume trading. We recently took £100,000 in a single day over the Bank Holiday weekend, so this role is all about thriving in a fast-paced environment, leading large teams, and maintaining exceptional standards under pressure.

With a new leadership team in place, it's an exciting time to join us. Our new General Manager joins from The Hope & Anchor, Brixton and The Wheatsheaf, Borough Market, while our new Head Chef, Hamoun, has recently moved across from The Windmill, Clapham to elevate our food offer.

What we're looking for

This role would suit an ambitious Deputy Manager, Designate Manager, or aspiring General Manager who is looking to gain valuable experience in a flagship, high-volume site before taking on their own pub in the near future.

You'll need:

  • Previous management experience within Young's or a similar premium pub operator
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills
  • Excellent attention to detail (you'll be helping keep the office side of the business running smoothly)
  • Confidence leading and developing junior managers
  • The ability to manage a large team in a busy, high-volume environment
  • A proactive approach and the ability to work independently

Key responsibilities

This role has a strong operational and back-office focus, including:

  • Managing day-to-day administration and email correspondence
  • Lost property management
  • Supporting payroll and people administration
  • Maintaining compliance and operational standards
  • Training, mentoring and developing junior management team members
  • Supporting the General Manager with the smooth running of the business

Experience with the following systems would be highly advantageous:

  • FACT
  • Stocklink
  • YesChef
  • Selima
  • HR systems and people administration

Why join The Ship?

  • Work in one of Young's highest-volume and most exciting pubs
  • Gain invaluable experience managing a large-scale operation
  • Structured development towards your own General Manager position
  • Work alongside an experienced new leadership team
  • Opportunity to make a real impact as part of an exciting new chapter for the business

What we offer

  • Competitive salary or hourly rate
  • Free Virgin Active gym membership
  • Access to Young's Career Pathway and General Manager development programme
  • 20% discount across all Young's pubs
  • 30% discount on overnight stays in Young's Pubs with Rooms
  • Share Save Scheme
  • Free meals on shift
  • 28 days holiday
  • Company pension scheme

If you're looking to run your own pub in the next 6–12 months and want experience in one of the busiest, most rewarding operations in the company, we'd love to hear from you.

What We Offer Our Assistant Managers:

  • Access to our Career Pathway and development towards GM - A large majority of our GM appointments are internal
  • Access to our fully funded apprenticeships and training and development courses
  • 20% discount in all Young's Pubs and 30% discount on overnight stays in our Pubs with Rooms
  • Access to our Share Save Scheme
  • Free Meals
  • 28 Days holiday per year
  • Company Pension Scheme

What we look for in an Assistant Manager:

We are looking for a motivated & experienced Assistant Manager to join and lead our team in our stylish, food focused pub. As the successful Assistant Manager you will have a genuine passion for exceptional customer service and a pro-active approach to team management. You will be enthusiastic & driven to continue the success of our pub and play a pivotal part in training our team to ensure they have the knowledge needed to delight our customers. You will also be someone who is committed to their career in hospitality and we can offer ongoing development to support you as you grow and succeed with us.
