Reports to: Chef Manager

Salary: £22,000 - £25,000 pending experience

Hours: 24 - 40 hrs

Location: Mill on the Brue, Bruton

Contract: Permanent, Full Time

About us: Mill on the Brue, established in 1982, is an residential activity centre offering a variety of activities to school children.

What we can offer you:

· Good work/life balance, with shifts of 07:00 - 15:00 or 12:00 - 20:00.

· Mostly Mon - Fri working with very occasional weekends (only 6-8 weeks of weekend working).

· Around a 3pm finish most Fridays.

· Happy working environment.

· Vegetable garden on site to use the seasonal produce.

Main purpose of post:

To work in the Catering team to ensure the provision of nutritious and delicious meals for our customers (mainly children, Teachers and Mill on the Brue employees), whilst maintaining high standards of cleanliness within the kitchen.

Mill on the Brue provides 3 meals a day for approximately 65-190 customers, with lunch being the main meal.

Key Tasks:

  • Assist in preparation of nutritious and delicious meals for all client groups
  • Serving food to minimise food waste
  • Directing other members of the catering team as required
  • Setting up the Longhouse for meal and break times
  • Cleaning down the kitchen and Longhouse
  • Deep cleaning the kitchen as directed by the Sous Chef and Chef Manager
  • Stock rotation, receiving and checking deliveries as directed by Chef Manager
  • Kitchen paperwork to include temperature recording
  • Ensure that any complaints are passed onto the Chef Manager.
  • Ensuring customers are delighted and cared for during their stay
  • Actively uphold the Centre’s environmental policy

Health and Safety

1. Health and Safety in the kitchen and Longhouse, ensuring all regulations are enforced

2. Assist in the management of recycling and food waste as directed

3. You will be expected to complete a COSSH and Food, Health and Hygiene course

Person Specification


· Experience of large scale catering and different dietary needs

· Experience of producing delicious and nutritious meals using seasonal produce

· Ability to work evenings and occasional weekends

· Able to work on a multi level site with steps

· Ability to work with a diverse team

· Able to manage staff in the absence of Chef Manager and Sous Chef

· Must like children and young people
