Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Tendering & Design Engineer with a specialism in high voltage networks up to 33kV join our team.

You will lead on the design of high voltage (HV) infrastructure, ensuring designs meet technical, regulatory, and client standards for renewables projects and associated network connections.
You will be responsible for producing detailed HV substation layouts, protection and control schemes, equipment selection, and interface design. This includes working closely with civil and structural teams and liaising with DNOs/IDNOs to ensure compliance with grid codes and specifications.

You will have a strong background in electrical engineering principles, with experience in creating designs for new electrical infrastructure projects.

Role Responsibilities

  • Lead the design of substations, including layout planning, protection & control, earthing design, and auxiliary systems.
  • Produce designs and tender submissions for connections and associated electrical infrastructure.
  • Conduct technical site assessments and feasibility studies for HV network extensions and reinforcements.
  • Develop and produce detailed engineering drawings (single line diagrams, GA layouts, schematics, wiring diagrams) in AutoCAD.
  • Coordinate with structural and civil designers to integrate substation infrastructure and cable routes.
  • Liaise with DNOs/IDNOs and ensure designs comply with ENA, BS, IEC, and relevant DNO design standards.
  • Prepare detailed bills of quantities (BOQ) and cost estimates in collaboration with the estimating team.
  • Develop construction design packs incorporating in-house and third-party input for delivery teams.
  • Identify and eliminate risks across construction, operational, and decommissioning phases.
  • Provide technical input during tender evaluations, client meetings, and design reviews.
  • Ensure all designs meet health, safety, environmental, and quality standards.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry standards and best practice.

Requirements

Essential:

  • Degree in Electrical Power Engineering (or HNC/HND with extensive HV design experience).
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in 33kV or higher voltage design, including substation and HV cable design.
  • Proven experience in 33kV substation layout, protection & control, earthing design, and auxiliary systems.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD for HV design drawings (SLDs, schematics, GA layouts, wiring diagrams).
  • Strong understanding of HV plant equipment (transformers, switchgear, CTs/VTs, etc.).
  • Experience liaising with DNOs/IDNOs for design submissions and approvals.
  • Full UK Driving Licence

Desirable:

  • Experience preparing and reviewing protection studies and earthing reports.
  • Experience with SCADA projects, PV schedule design, or energy conversion systems.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards Chartership.
  • Familiarity with relevant electrical design software.
  • Previous experience within an ICP utility contractor or IDNO environment.
