Learning Support Assistant

The Old School House

The Old School House School is an independent specialist school within The Chartwell Group, providing education for pupils aged 7–16 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. All pupils have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), and we pride ourselves on delivering personalised education that enables young people to re-engage with learning and achieve positive outcomes.

We are seeking a resilient, adaptable and enthusiastic Learning Support Assistant to join our dedicated team.

This is not a traditional classroom support role. Our Learning Support Assistants are active members of the education team and are expected to deliver learning activities, lead planned sessions, support accredited learning programmes and transport pupils to educational and vocational activities. Successful candidates must be confident working independently, building positive relationships with young people and adapting to the changing needs of the school day.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support pupils throughout the school day, both in and out of the classroom.
  • Deliver planned learning activities and structured educational sessions to individuals and small groups.
  • Support the delivery of personalised accredited learning programmes, including BTEC and vocational qualifications tailored to individual pupil interests, strengths and aspirations.
  • Assist pupils in completing coursework, portfolios and practical learning activities.
  • Build positive and professional relationships with pupils while maintaining clear boundaries and high expectations.
  • Support pupils with SEMH needs and implement behaviour support strategies consistently.
  • Monitor, record and report on pupil progress and engagement.
  • Transport pupils safely to educational visits, vocational placements, community activities and other approved destinations using school vehicles.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers and colleagues to support pupil achievement and wellbeing.
  • Promote and maintain high standards of safeguarding at all times.

Essential Requirements

  • GCSE Grade 4/C or above (or equivalent) in English, Mathematics and Science.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Experience working with children or young people.
  • Confidence leading learning activities and working independently with groups of pupils.
  • Experience supporting children with SEND, SEMH needs or challenging behaviour.
  • Strong communication and organisational skills.
  • Ability to remain calm, resilient and professional in challenging situations.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.

Desirable Requirements

  • Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent.
  • Experience within a specialist, SEMH or alternative provision setting.
  • Experience delivering vocational, practical or accredited learning programmes.
  • Knowledge of EHCPs, trauma-informed practice and restorative approaches.

Hours and Salary

Hours: Full-time, 40 hours per week
Pattern: Monday to Friday, term time only plus training days
Salary: From £22,678 per annum (actual salary), dependent on qualifications and experience
