Full job description

Job Purpose:

To prepare, cook, and serve high-quality meals in a canteen environment while maintaining excellent food hygiene standards. The role includes customer interaction, maintaining a clean and safe kitchen, and occasionally working independently.

Key Responsibilities:

Food Preparation & Cooking

  • Prepare and cook fresh meals in line with menu plans and dietary requirements
  • FOH duties, serving, using the till keeping the are clean,
  • Ensure food is prepared to high quality and presentation standards
  • Monitor portion control and minimise food waste
  • Check deliveries and ensure proper food storage

Customer Service

  • Serve customers in a friendly and professional manner
  • Respond to customer queries regarding ingredients and allergens
  • Take feedback and maintain a positive dining experience

Cleaning & Hygiene

  • Maintain a clean and organised kitchen at all times
  • Clean work surfaces, equipment, utensils, and storage areas
  • Complete daily and weekly cleaning schedules
  • Ensure compliance with food hygiene and health & safety regulations

Stock & Administration

  • Monitor stock levels and report shortages
  • Rotate stock following FIFO (First In, First Out) principles
  • Record temperature checks and maintain kitchen logs

Skills & Experience Required:

  • Previous experience as a chef or cook in a canteen, café, or similar environment
  • Knowledge of food safety and hygiene regulations
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail
