Mandarin Language Specialist

Location(s): Cheltenham or Samlesbury

Starting Salary: £37,892, which includes a base salary of £35,134 and a concessionary payment of £2,758. Upon successful completion of the 6-month probationary period, you’ll also become eligible for an additional annual payment of £3,120 in recognition of your language skills.

Flexible working: We offer flexible working options to support a healthy work-life balance. This role does not accommodate home working; however, flexible, part-time and compressed hours are all possible. Please see our Life at GCHQ page to find out more about how we can support you: https://www.gchq-careers.co.uk/life-at-gchq.html

GCHQ is an intelligence, cyber and security agency with a mission to keep the UK safe. We use cutting-edge technology, ingenuity and partnerships to identify, analyse and disrupt threats. Working with our intelligence partners MI5 and MI6, we protect the UK from terrorism, cyber-attacks and espionage. At GCHQ you’ll do varied and fascinating work in a supportive and inclusive environment that puts the emphasis on teamwork.

As a Mandarin Language Specialist, you’ll use your linguistic expertise to extract key information from a range of spoken and written language materials, contextualising them and making them accessible to others. With your knowledge of Chinese cultural nuances, ideologies and politics, you’ll deliver accurate, informed conclusions that shape intelligence, support operations, and inform government policy. In doing so, you’ll contribute to critical activities that help keep the country safe.

Working as part of a thriving community of people who share your passion for language, you’ll be supported from day one with a dedicated mentor and surrounded by specialists keen to share their knowledge, advice, and guidance. With a collaborative, detail-oriented mindset, and effective problem-solving skills, you’ll bring an analytical approach to your work and have real influence as your contributions help unlock the bigger picture.

Comprehensive training and support are provided from the moment you join, alongside opportunities to join the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIoL®) within the first five years and pursue recognised professional qualifications.

No specific experience or qualifications are required to apply. However, you must be proficient in all forms of Mandarin to at least CEFR C1 level, with advanced active and passive language skills and excellent written English (https://rm.coe.int/CoERMPublicCommonSearchServices/DisplayDCTMContent?documentId=090000168045bb52). This proficiency may come from growing up in a multilingual family, undertaking language training in the military, or studying Mandarin to a high academic level.

Please note that passing a language proficiency test forms part of the interview process. You can listen to a Mandarin audio clip here to help assess your level: https://www.gchq-careers.co.uk/our-careers/specialist-roles/language-specialists/mandarin-practice.html. If you can understand most of it, we encourage you to apply.

A wide range of benefits is on offer, including flexible working options to support a healthy work-life balance. Annual leave starts at 25 days, rising to 30 after five years, alongside paid parental and adoption leave, and access to on-site facilities such as gyms, restaurants, and coffee bars at selected locations. Altogether, this creates an environment where you can thrive both professionally and personally.

We’re proud of our open, inclusive workplace, where you’ll find a range of sports, interest groups, and social clubs. Our growing affinity networks include ethnic minority and gender equality groups; wellbeing, mental health, neurodiversity, and disability communities; LGBTQ+ support groups; and faith and no-faith networks. You can learn more on the diversity pages of our website.

To find out more and apply, visit our website.

To be eligible to apply, you must be a British citizen. If you hold dual nationality, where one component is British, you’ll still be considered. Candidates must normally have been resident in the UK for seven out of the last ten years; this is particularly important if you were born outside the UK. We welcome applications from candidates of all ages, and there is no upper age limit. You can apply at the age of 17; however, if successful, you will not be offered a start date before your 18th birthday. Full eligibility details can be found on our website.
